OT - Pacific Blue flights to Qtown to bring international choice

Queenstown Airport has a new international carrier, with Pacific Blue set to launch flights to Sydney by September.

Pacific Blue New Zealand sales manager Bruce Moffatt said an announcement would be made today regarding two new South Island destinations but would not say what those destinations were.

"It could be Queenstown," he said.

But The Southland Times understands that one of the destinations will be Queenstown, meaning for the first time Air New Zealand and Qantas will face competition for the Australian market into Queenstown....

Pacific Blue Adds New Queenstown, Dunedin And Wellington International Flights
“Flights From More Nz International Airports
Than Any Other Airline”
Queenstown – Sydney Direct! On Sale From $259*
Dunedin – Brisbane Direct! On Sale From $189*
Wellington – Sydney Direct! On Sale From $189*

Wednesday 10 June 2009: Just a week after announcing international direct services from Hamilton to Australia, low fare airline Pacific Blue said today it will add new direct services to Australia from Queenstown, Dunedin and Wellington from September.

The Christchurch-based airline has the following new flights on sale from 10am today, including special launch fares:
* Queenstown-Sydney: Two flights a week
o Special launch fare of $259* one-way on the internet.
o Regular lead-in fares will start from $289* one-way on the internet.
* Dunedin-Brisbane: Three flights a week
o Special launch fare of $189* one-way on the internet.
o Regular lead-in fares will start from $209* one-way on the internet.
* Wellington-Sydney: Three flights a week
o Special launch fare of $189* one-way on the internet.
o Regular lead-in fares will start from $239* one-way on the internet.

Virgin Blue Group CEO, Brett Godfrey, said the new flights would make air travel more affordable for more New Zealanders.

“Travellers in regional New Zealand have made it clear that they want the same easy access to low fares that the three main centres enjoy and our announcements today go a long way to achieving that,” he said.

“When the new services start Pacific Blue will have international flights from six New Zealand airports – Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Queenstown – which is more than any other airline.”

Pacific Blue would be the first low-fare airline to fly internationally into Queenstown, which to date had been served only by full-service carriers.

“As much as Kiwis enjoy a warm weather holiday in Australia, we know that Aussies love to visit the stunning scenery of Queenstown for adventure and ski holidays or simply to relax, and now they’ll be able to do that at a reasonable price,” Mr Godfrey said.

The airline also announced it would introduce a direct daily jet service between Dunedin and Auckland to replace its current Dunedin-Christchurch-Auckland service.

Pacific Blue said it was making some changes to its trans-Tasman, Pacific and domestic schedules to accommodate the new routes. This included reducing capacity on domestic services by around 1% of available seat kilometres and retiming some domestic flights to offer a more “business friendly” timetable.

Air New Zealand Expects Travel Demand to Fall 10%

Air New Zealand Ltd., the nations biggest airline, expects travel demand to fall 10 percent in the next fiscal year as the global recession cuts leisure and business trips.

Were not expecting any pickup in demand through the coming 12 months, Chief Executive Officer Rob Fyfe said in an interview in Kuala Lumpur today. Forward bookings are down by about 10 percent across the board, he said. The airlines fiscal year ends in June.

Auckland-based Air New Zealand last month announced it will reduce capacity and fire workers in its second round of cuts in six months as a deepening recession damps international and domestic travel. The airline will curb capacity by 3 percent in the year beginning July 1, it said last month....

OT - 'All set for airport's new takeoff '

Christchurch International Airport chairman David Mackenzie has long been passionate about the aviation industry, writes ALAN WOOD.

Christchurch International Airport chairman David Mackenzie has every right to feel at home within the busy terminal or outside on the tarmac - the South Islander has aviation in his blood.

During an intense career in commercial law he often touched base with what can be a fragile industry - subject to airline consolidation any time passenger numbers fall....

'We've got under Air NZ's skin'

Jetstar chief executive Bruce Buchanan yesterday hinted at a fractured relationship with rival Air New Zealand, saying the Aussie low-cost carrier had got under its opponent's skin.

Jetstar, which arrived in Queenstown this week, has replaced Qantas domestic services with new daily flights to Auckland and Christchurch.

Yesterday, Mr Buchanan told a Queenstown Chamber of Commerce luncheon that a long relationship between Air New Zealand and the Qantas group Jetstar's parent company had not extended to the new low-cost carrier....

Airline eyes up city for new service

International flights could be back on the agenda for Palmerston North.

The city will be considered by a new Australian airline looking to start a trans-Tasman service this year, it has been confirmed.

Pacific Wings non-executive director Geoff Bowmaker indicated the city was on the airline's radar, though no routes had been confirmed.

"It's the style of destination that is within our thinking," Mr Bowmaker said.

The start-up Australian airline, which has described itself as "well capitalised", applied earlier this month to operate in New Zealand and New Caledonia....
