Flying with the big boys

You can bet on it - New Zealand will have a new regional airline soon, but it will not be called Kiwi Pacific.

Nelson teenager Lamar Hargreaves' claim that he was starting a new passenger airline of that name next month is now being dismissed by industry players as a "near-hoax".

But there are other offstage stirrings that indicate the lure of apparently empty skies following the demise of Origin Pacific is proving too much....

Wings clipped on Tasman flying options

Air New Zealand has limited options for any radical overhaul of its transtasman services, industry analysts say.

Last week it cut its capacity on the Tasman, partly in response to the failure of its proposal to share services with Qantas....

Blind spots blamed for planes' mid-air collision

Blind spots in two airplanes were the main cause of a mid-air collision that killed two pilots near Palmerston North this year, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) says.

Two Massey University School of Aviation planes collided in February as their pilots were flying exercises as part of tests for Commercial Pilot Licences....

Air NZ to reduce Tasman flights after code-share proposal fails

A cut in Air New Zealand's capacity on its trans-Tasman flights is seen as a logical consequence of its failure to gain a code-sharing agreement with Qantas.

The airline is cutting capacity by an average 11% by reducing flights or using smaller planes, both directly or through its subsidiary, Freedom Air.

Capacity on routes from Dunedin will be reduced by 28%; Christchurch by 7%; and Palmerston North and Wellington by 15% each.

No other airlines flying the Tasman are reducing capacity yet, although The Australian Financial Review expects Qantas to face the same issue....

Unions Challenge Air NZ

Unions representing ground service workers at Air New Zealand have filed legal action in the Employment Court over allegations of breaches of good faith and due process and are asking for an injunction to stop planned contracting-out. Service and Food Workers Union Northern Region Secretary Jill Ovens said the court action will be one part of the campaign to keep the jobs at Air New Zealand.

Air NZ cuts up rough over union's use of airline's logo

Air New Zealand is upset unionists for 1700 ground staff have turned its internationally-recognised koru logo into a pair of scissors to campaign against cuts to their jobs and conditions.

The company would not comment last night on the use of its logo on a mock 'Stop the Cuts' boarding pass, saying only that it was considering a response to an injunction application lodged with the Employment Court in Auckland yesterday afternoon....

Union says Air NZ don't own koru

Air New Zealand has slapped unions representing ground staff workers with the threat of legal action over the use of the Koru in protest stickers.

The Service and Food Workers Union says a lawyer for Air New Zealand claims the koru is an iconic symbol associated exclusively with their client....

Air service to Wellington reinstated

COMMUNITY pressure has been the major driver in a decision by Air New Zealand to reinstate a regular service between Wanganui and Wellington.

The new service, operated by Air NZ Link carrier Eagle Air, starts on February 12 next year and will provide a daily return service Monday to Friday to the capital city, flying during peak morning and evening times.

An additional Friday night service will fly from Wanganui to Wellington, returning to Wanganui on Sunday.

The announcement revives the service that last operated in 2002....

Union wants airline to think again

Political unrest in Fiji has the Service and Food Workers Union asking Air New Zealand to abandon plans to outsource clerical jobs there.

The union claims Air New Zealand has been restructuring union members' jobs as it works to secure a contract with an outsource provider.

Service and Food Workers Union spokeswoman Jill Ovens says Air New Zealand tried to outsource jobs there a few years ago, but had to change plans because of political unrest....

High airport costs mean higher prices

Landing and take-off costs, not airline competition, are the reason for the higher price per kilometre for short flights around the country, Air New Zealand says.

Wanganui-Wellington air fare $180

Air New Zealand has announced the price of fares on its Wanganui-Wellington service, which starts in February next year, setting the one-way fare at $180.

Pam Wong, marketing communications manager for Air NZ, said a return fare would be double that $360.

The first flight takes off from Wanganui on February 12, at 7.10am and touches down in Wellington 35 minutes later. The return flight leaves the capital at 7.10pm and arrives here at 7.45pm....

Plane makes emergency landing

An Air New Zealand Link aircraft with 13 passengers on board has made an emergency landing at Hokitika Airport.

Hokitika Fire Officer Harry Collette says the twin-engine plane was flying to Christchurch, when passengers reported the smell of smoke in the cabin. He says the aircraft returned to Hokitika and landed without incident. Mr Collette says an electrical fault is the likely cause.

Gisbornes plane fares unreasonably sky-high

Air New Zealand is claiming landing and take-off costs are the reason plane flights to and from Gisborne are among the most expensive in the country, even though these costs account for only $2.35 per fare.

In a survey of the cheapest widely available internet fares from Auckland to popular destinations, Whangarei was the most expensive at 57 cents per kilometre followed by Gisborne, Napier, Nelson and Blenheim.

These were also the routes not serviced by Air NZ competitor Qantas.

Flights to Christchurch and Queenstown came out cheapest at 16c/km and Wellington the second cheapest at 24c/km....
