BKK-SYD-AKL-RAR. RAR-AKL-BKK international connections
Hello everyone,
I have a friend with a Thai passport who will be traveling from Bangkok to Rarotonga (Cook Islands) with these itineraries:
BKK-SYD connection on TG
SYD-AKL connection on NZ
AKL-RAR on NZ
She does not have a visa to New Zealand, but checking online, there is a visa exemption for Thai passport holders for Cook Islands (RAR). Will she need to clear immigration in AKL to continue on her flight to RAR on Air New Zealand? Has anyone done international arrival to AKL, connecting to RAR?
Return flight will be RAR-AKL on NZ, with a short connection to BKK on TG. I'm assuming procedure will be same on the return.
Thank you so much in advance!

Question I have is if Auckland - Rarotonga flight on New Zealand Air is considered domestic or international. Specifically, if the SYD-AKL-RAR flights can be connected without having to clear immigration.
Thanks.

Bare in mind the transit point in AKL will close at around 2359 and re-open around 0430 depending on the first flight of the morning. If arrive between that time without an Visa you'll be stuck waiting in an corridor.

Not needing to clear immigration both in Aus and NZ does not mean you don't need a visa. These countries may require a transit visa even for international to international connections.
Ask TG to thru check all the way to RAR if possible as NZ would be less willing to through check bags on separate tickets. If TG through checked them all the way to RAR, there is nothing NZ can do to stop it from going all the way.
