Trans Tasman Premium Economy - Narrowbody
Just got a survey from AIRNZ re narrowbody PE for trans Tasman.
Options are for:
1. a single cabin, 3 and 3, with a neighbour-free guarantee for PE and usual PE trappings. Looks like the first 4 rows. Same spacing and seat width as current.
2. separate partitioned cabin with 2 and 2 seating. More legroom and seat width. Seats in artist's representation looked different from widebody PE offering but seemed ok. Usual PE trappings. No more space + for other pax.
That is all

Sounds very much like the Business Class cabin that Air New Zealand used to have on its international A320 fleet.

I remember years ago before S2S that I saw NZ seats maps for either an A320 or 767, I forget which, that clearly had the existing Business Class cabins labelled as Premium Economy eg. still the recliner type seats as opposed to the BP seats in the 747 and 777.

IMHO the need for PE on a TT flight is minimal - but overall I think offering it is a smart idea. Even if it's just HVCs spending $100 to upgrade it's generating additional revenue for those seats.
Reducing seat pitch on the A320 would be a very bad idea though. IMHO the space+ economy experience on the A320 is a fantastic offering for medium haul economy.

How does the sketch compare to what VA offer trans Tasman?
Many business will not pay business class for trans Tasman but will pay for economy (in what ever flavour)

I heard a rumor once they go down to 2 767's Business Class will be rebranded Premium Economy, due to the 777/787 PE product being pretty much identical / better, and the 777-300 PE product somewhat being superior in some regards.

I'd rather fly in an 789 or 777 PE than, and 763 J.

Could they fit 30 of the new PE seats (i.e. another row) in the front cabin of the 763?
Would they spend the money on a front cabin only refit?

If the pairs of two seat off the 789's fit into the 763, it would be worth it as they could just refit them to new 789's when delivered.

They haven't spent a cent on anything but maintenance on the 763 fleet for a few years. Spending money now to upgrade seats on the 3 oldest planes staying would make no sense for the remaining time in the fleet.
