I think the only reasonable hope to maintain at this point is that the pilots were able to slow down the plane enough such that when it hit the water it did not completely break-up and you might have some survivors in the ocean.

As chrissxb noted, the French President noted it in a press conference. The AP has reported it, it is on their website. I won't post it here as it is copyrighted.

I'm guessing that the US AF Satellites already know what happened from a high level anyway; and are communicating the the French Govt

Why do you say that?

A terrible tragedy. I hope they are able to find the plane quickly and with survivors.

CNN sums up the "facts" (rumors?) quite precise:

Officials said the Airbus A330-200 sent automated messages of electrical failure and pressure loss as it hit turbulence, vanishing from the radar early in its flight from Rio de Janeiro to Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris.
Sounds like a tough job to find the airplane - or what's left from it. If that turns out to be true, then this is really really bad news.

Indeed. Leaving aside the important rescue and recovery work (hopefully the former, more likely the latter), the investigation is going to be extremely difficult if the wreckage is scattered over a wide area and in deep water. TWA 800 and Swissair 111 were difficult recovery operations/investigations, but both aircraft were at lower altitudes (thereby containing the debris field) and landed in shallow waters. If this plane dropped from cruising altitude and is over deep water, recovery is going to be very, very difficult.

A330s don't just vanish. We need to know what happened and we are going to need the wreckage and the black boxes to help with that.

If they have the infrastructure in place or do not need it somewhere else and since an act of terror could not be ruled out earlier today, it would surprise me, if they do not take a look at the area when a civil airliner is lost...

Have any new facts (not speculations) surfaced in the last 6 hours?

It seems like nobody knows anything meaningful, other than the plane is not in Paris.

Very sad and agonizing for the relatives

I agree. Not just from satellite of course; the Navy has their own surveillance capabilities. In anycase, I'm sure the exact location is known, but not being reported to the public at this time.

BBc now reporting it must have been a "sudden and catastrophic emergency".

"This suggests whatever happened, happened before the crew could put out a mayday radio call. It was likely a sudden and catastrophic emergency."

Dreadful news for all involved. I can only add my deepest sympathy to all that has been expressed here already.

I would not be so confident. It went down in about the worst imaginable spot.

If we know the general area where the plane went down (within 100 miles)
couldn't we send it some subs to scan the sea floor for the wreckage?

Another 228 in his hands now...RIP
