major increase price increase in 12 hrs

looked at AF RT 4/22-4/28 on AF 65 and 66 yesterday: $1422 for 2. Economy
Just went to book and same flight is now $2234 for 2 . Is this common? plane still pretty empty. Could it come down again?

I doubt that the price increased. Likely, the fare bucket sold out while you were deciding.

Even if you had access to loads, that would not tell you much as between two discounted fare buckets.

Isnt this the definition of a price increase from the point of view of a traveller ?

Look at other airlines. You can travel for less than $500 per person on direct flights on your chosen dates.

Even paying for checked luggage, you'll come well ahead of your AF tickets....

Or, if it absolutely must be AF65 and AF66, travel a month earlier.

I think perhaps when you were getting your $1422 fare, you were actually using the calendar incorrectly, and looking at dates in March rather than in April.

Google Flights reports that your chosen flights- AF65 and 66 - on these April dates - 22nd and 28th - have been priced well over $1000 per person for the past 2 months...

FWIW, I have been looking for tickets to other destinations in Western US in April for a few days and have also noticed a great increase yesterday morning.

EDIT: Whoops, I did not realise it was not CDG-LAX but LAX-CDG...

I'm not sure any relevance can be inferred from that; Europe (?) to West Coast is a completely different market than the OP's specific LAX-CDG flights.

Even looking at the OP's chosen flights - AF65/66 - for the same days - but travelling in the opposite direction, i.e. starting from CDG - we can see that the prices are roughly half.

No.

Could well be apples and oranges. E.g., the original fare was inflexible whereas the available fare has some flexibility, permits a stopover, an open jaw or whatever. Changes in fare bucket are rarely a simple price increase. Or at least it ought not to be presumed.
