Additional sketchy information from CBC that actually mentions CAT:

At least 35 injured from turbulence on Air Canada flight

Hawaii News Now is reporting 35 injured and 9 transported to a hospital. Doesn’t sound like much fun.

Looks like it was quite a scene at HNL with ambulances on standby for a potentially large number of injuries.

Looks like FIN701 is getting dispatched to HNL as AC 2033 after arriving from PEK. Then onwards to SYD as AC2035 on July 12 at 12noon.

I've transcribed the highlights of the above video report, for those who can't watch it now.

According to the report:
  • Most injuries were concussions & head injuries as a result of being lifted out of their seats and hitting the ceiling.
  • Passenger report: It only lasted 5-10 seconds but it was violent.
  • The plane "must have dropped a hundred feet or so."
  • People went up to the ceiling through the length of the plane.
  • One pax hit the ceiling so hard that she snapped & broke open the oxygen mask container
  • There was a lot of panic onboard
  • Most injuries were to pasengers without their seatbelts on
  • Several flight attendants were also significantly injured
  • There's a report that a food cart landed on an flight attendant

As a frequent 33'er this is of course spooky.

It always gets bouncy over HNL and then subsequently the Equator.

Obviously caught everyone off guard, hope everyone is OK

I suspect that's an understatement.

As always. Wiser among us surely keep their seat belt at least loosely attached most of the time. Not the first time, won't be the last that this sort of things happens.

Thanks for that. AC 33 tonight (Thu 11) is still showing upguaged to 77W, and all fare classes wide open, but 34 back on Sat 13 is completely zeroed out. But maybe the upguage has more to do with the originally scheduled 77L being late back from HKG and 34 still in YVR with mechanical issues, last I saw operating to YYZ as 34 at 5.15 pm.

Still wondering if tonight's 33 might make the extra stop.

After reports of a similar incident on an AC TPAC a couple years ago, I now religiously wear my seatbelt at all times while seated. Hitting my head on the ceiling of an aircraft is not among the experiences I'd like to have in my life.

One gets used to it; if I had 100 AQM for every time I’ve hit my head on the ceiling of an aircraft (while firmly buckled in), I’d be tops on the SEMM leaderboard. The trick is to keep one’s iPad on a tether so you can fish it from the back of the cabin while flying.

If you are dumb enough to not be wearing the belt when you are sitting in your seat you get what you deserve.

Well sure. The trick is to have it on when the severe turbulence hits and to only choose times to undo the seatbelt when you know unexpected severe turbulence will not occur

I was thinking of this very thing only yesterday on a TATL to help while away the time. I probably had my seatbelt off 8-10 times over the course of a 7.5 hour flight. Twice to go to the washroom, twice to get something out of my suitcase that was overhead, and the other times to get something out of my little backpack, which was under the foot rest: I couldn’t reach it without undoing my seatbelt (I was in an LH business seat). It would have been pretty easy to be unlucky and have the seatbelt undone when the aircraft hit some super rough stuff, but I wouldn’t have called it negligence had it happened.

Well, sure. Same for most of us I suppose. Still, significantly reduces the risks. Also, if one happens to be awake and standing, one has a better chance of reacting quickly and to try protecting oneself somehow.
