I could be wrong, but believe there are still approx. 6 763 in the mainline fleet.

Because it only got stuck in a snow bank, not like the other bird that landed hard at YHZ a few years ago.

AC must have had an action plan for provisioning another aircraft even before original one landed, since it would have taken at least 6 hours just to fly one in from YYZ or YUL, and a good 3 or 4 hours to get one in place from YVR.
They would. ETOPS is not just about an model being being certified. Wendover to the rescue:

I'm shocked that it took so long to turn around. According to EF

RMKS/DELAYED DUE TO AWAITING MISSING CATERING ITEMS DIVERT DUE DISRUPTIVE PAX FLT DIVERTED BACK TO YYZ DUE TO DISRUPTIVE PAX PLAN IS TO REMOVE PAX GAS AND GO PENDING MTCE INVEST AND RECREWING

YYZ 1355 00:30L YYZ?1850 789 IFG AD AA
YYZ?2207 08:42L PVG 0038 08:28L 789 ACT AD EA
so the original departure was 30min late due missing catering items, and the "Gas & Go" ended up having the flight 8h42m late. It appears based on the EF information that it took 3h17m to turn it around.

An Air Canada flight with 170 passengers on board landed safely after striking birds during its descent to the Ottawa International Airport shortly after midnight.

The airline said the plane involved was flight AC 342, an A321 Airbus.

Records on flight tracking website Flight Aware said the plane landed around 12:30 a.m. ET on Thursday, making it to the gate about 1:20 a.m.

Audio recordings from LiveATC.net suggest the pilot issued a mayday call after the aircraft hit a flock of birds, damaging one of its engines.

According to the recording, there were eight crew members on board...

I was on this plane last night. Amazing work by the flight crew to get us all down safely. Outside of the engine surge and a weird smell I couldn't see or feel anything wrong (although I was on the starboard side in J and the engine that was hit was on the port side). It was only after we were on the ground and stopped on the runway that the pilot let us know that we hit birds, that they had to shut down the #1 engine, and that it damaged hydraulics and the nose gear steering. We were towed from the runway to the gate after about 45 minutes worth of safety checks performed by the YOW fire crew.

I did not see any injuries nor did they disembark any passengers first outside of the normal process.

Again, commend Air Canada for their professionalism, especially after listening to the ATC recording.

Five thousand tonnes of fuel on board. All sorts of impressive.
