The say it was a mayday, which means the pilot must have been more than just a little bit worried.

Good job by all.
When they ask to go out of the lake is telling.

WX at YEG:
Looks like several diversions today into YEG: AC 232, AC 123, AC 179, and AC 193.
AC 232 (ex-YVR) got all the way over YEG then returned all the way back to YVR. The others diverted to YYC and YXE.

High cross-winds since early morning in excess of 90 kph coupled with heavy rain caused many flights to be cancelled or diverted at YEG today.
It has been howling and pouring rain relentlessly for hours since about 2:30 a.m. and is still going at 1:45 p.m. Flooding is starting in many areas.

For those who can't make flights in and out of YEG today, AC is adding extra flights tomorrow.

Its not unusual to have a few diversions to YYC because of storms in the summer here, but to have planes turn around so close to YEG, or divert to places like Saskatoon or Kelowna (I heard this from a friend) is very rare. I bet the airport is just a mess with pax...

Air Canada plane came within 11 metres of van at Pearson, TSB says
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toront...says-1.2722740
A close call involving an Air Canada jet and an unattended maintenance van at Pearson airport last year was the result of several factors, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada has concluded.
The March 11, 2013, incident saw a van roll across a runway where an Air Canada Embraer was preparing to land. A TSB investigation has determined that the plane passed over the van at a height of about 11 metres as it made its landing.
