Something unexpected yesterday (Tuesday) at OGG (Maui). I was calling for departure clearance at around 4pm and heard Air Canada 7052 requesting clearance to Vancouver (we stepped on each other). For a second I thought I was on the wrong frequency, but, sure enough, there was an AC 767 parked at one of the gates. That's the first time I've ever seen an Air Canada plane at Maui. Other OGG pilots were also saying they hadn't seen Air Canada here before.
Anyone have any idea what he was doing here? Strange flight number: 7052. A charter, maybe?

AB I think you've been exceeding your ceiling a bit, I'm pretty sure I've flown AC to OGG too. Funny flight though. AC 7052 was YEG-YVR today.

I've flown as pilot to Maui several times within the last ten years.My most memorable layover was watching Tiger Woods and Mike Weir at the Mercedes championship at Kapalua. Daily flight in the winter. We also fly to Kona and of course Honolulu.Originally Posted by After Burner

Sorry, I worded my post very badly. What I meant was there is never an Air Canada flight during normal, daytime hours. They sneak in and depart under the cover of darkness after the tower is closed. Flight on weekend went mechnical, replacement aircraft sent to OGG. What you saw was the original aircraft that has been fixed and being ferried back to Canada.

Someone told me the reason for AC's late night schedule is that their pilots can't handle landing in the afternoon 40 kt crosswinds. Is that true?

Give me a break. You obviously have not flown through a Canadian winter. Add slippery snowswept runways to your tropical breezes.The schedule is for better aircraft utilisation.
