Um, BU Alum here. Please don't tar me with the same brush as Shore9. Thanks.

BTW, it's amazing how a little effort in French went a long way when visiting the Carefourre de l'Estrie (or any other place in in Sherbrooke)

I did recognized it, however, it has been at least 25 years since I had to use it (when I was a navy cadet) , therefore, I was calling in shore9 expertise to help me decipher it...

to be honest you do get a chance to practice french, but not to the extent that one would think. I've picked up a bit here, but French was never one of those classes that I did well in.
That sounds reasonable, not that anyone asked me.

But I don't see how it could be summarized as "proud not to have picked up French".

I think this is another case of "think what you're saying before you post". If you'd led with what I quoted from you above, you'd have gotten a lot less grief.

This is sad, very very sad.

I am a complete ignoramus when it comes to French, I have even made comments about wishing the AC Western flights did not have French announcements, however I would like to be able to speak and understand the language.
I cannot fathom being proud of not being able to speak a language. Being multi lingual is one of the greatest gifts IMO.

Hey, why bother? It's his loss. Let him find out the hard way.

Leafs/Flames/Habs/Canucks tickets?

Give the current situation, we could be offering up Flames tix for SSWUs,
Canucks tix for NA, Habs for Lounge passes, and Leafs tix for a free newspaper upon boarding. Would this code get by the censors?

^^^

I am horrid at French but made every effort to speak it when in QB even though the reps I worked with were fully bilingual. When the customers understood I was from AB but making a genuine effort they went out of there way to try and speak English back to me.

I too am sad that I don't know French (or any other language) and you have a wonderful opportunity to try and learn it while you are there shore9. Trust me, take the opportunity and show a real desire to want to learn and you will find MANY people in Sherbrooke who are willing to speak to you in French and they will be very patient and understanding about it.

As a business major as well I can't tell you the times I wished I spoke a second language, especially French in Canada. You can learn it at your own pace, it costs you nothing and the pride in being able to converse will be enormous and it's free for you to learn while there.

I personally can't stand your attitude towards your environment but remember that you can change it. Give this some thought and if you decide that you want to learn French and I would be willing to congratulate you here for a change in opinions.

If nothing else, you live in BC and want to travel for work so who do you think stands a better chance of being sent to YUL for a company when it comes time to take trips to QB for the company, the person who speaks French or the person who happened to go to University there but doesn't know a thing about the language?
