This new annual thread has been carved out of the previous thread in an effort to reduce the number of megathreads on the AC forum. For those interested previous versions are the original 2004 - 2014 thread , 2015 edition, 2016 edition and 2017 edition
The original thread started by accident but quickly became a popular place to come and discuss off topic things such as hockey, new movies, or almost anything that wouldn't fit into existing AC forum threads. More Air Canada or Aeroplan topics such as flight feedback, in-flight services issues or mileage earning/redemption are all topics that should go into existing AC forum threads so others can benefit from this information. Topics about hotels or airlines and/or their loyalty programs should be posted elsewhere on FT as should topics better suited to other forums such as Travel Products for questions about luggage or Travel Photography for discussion about cameras.
While the conversation is more relaxed as it would be in a lounge that doesn't mean however that the FT rules don't apply here as they definitely do so please refrain from controversial topics such as politics or religion, avoid profanities and treat other lounge patrons with the same respect you expect.

Had turkey dinner last night. It was awesome. 26# bird that I made to absolute perfection. *pops collar*.
Going to have some leftovers now, although I didn't end up with as much as you'd think. I realized when my house cleared out last night that our friends must all be vultures and they must have taken a healthy dose of leftovers with them. Probably my wife's fault. Love her generosity, except when it costs me turkey.

I made Roast Beef tonight. Why be traditional? My family much prefers a good pot roast to a bird.
My wife made an interesting dessert though. We each got a whole apple, peeled, cored and sliced. She wrapped each apple in the pastry that she uses for banketstaaf at Christmas and put a mixture of brown sugar, oats, and cinnamon inside and on top. We ate it when it was still warm from the oven. Fantastic.
As you can see, we didn't break out the fancy china. It may not look like much, but the taste was amazing. (sorry for the Thinkpad ad)

Well I tend not to eat turkey much, basically once a year and occasionally Christmas. That said I had a turkey burger literally two days ago but only because of a lack of chicken ones. If it’s cooked well, it’s good. On occasion imho

Turns out buying the whole duck costs the same or maybe less than a pair of breasts. So I bought the whole one, currently in the process of cooking the rest of the duck with white beans, with all the skin and all the fat, cassoulet-style. Which alas my wife won't touch. While breast cooked rare, served with red berries sauce she enjoys.

We'll do duck breasts today. With a bottle of champagne. Premier cru from a small producer, not one of the major commercial brands.

I imagine YVR may be better for this kind of food, the duck anyway.

”Is there a lounge closer to the gate?”
”Yes but they don’t have hot food, only we do”
”Great, I’ll stay here”
Since when is a “toaster” hot food? And no pickles. Not that this was AC ofc...

I have no idea why buying duck in Canada is so difficult. Duck parts anyway, I can occasionally find breasts at St Lawrence market (~$5 each) or the pre cooked legs at Superstore but for the most part a full duck for $15-20 seems the best value. Unfortunately I prefer to properly slow cook a leg and I haven’t found raw ones for sale. Lamb is even harder, everyone only sells the leg which is ridiculously expensive for one.
We can get either breasts, or smokes breasts, or fresh whole duck at (some, all?) local COOP in Calgary, at least at this time of the year.
Not sure if I cooked the breasts better than previously, or if breasts from a whole duck are better/fresher than if you just buy breasts. But anyway, they were nice, still very pink/medium rare inside. While previouly they would always come up a bit overcooked to our taste.
Pan fried, first six minutes on the skin side, then another three on the other side. With a weight on top so the meat has good contact with the pan. Stainless pan, not non-stick.
