Such that it is actually searchable text - one of the important changes to the Aeroplan program in 2019 for Super Elites:

New for Air Canada Altitude Super Elite 100K members: Complimentary changes and refunds
Beginning July 15, 2019, Air Canada Super Elite 100K members will no longer be charged a fee when they request a change to their Flight Reward booking. Additionally, these members will also no longer be charged a fee to refund their bookings. These fee waivers will apply to all bookings, including those made prior to the new policy coming into effect.

"Solid Ground" but their share price is a quarter of what it was and they plan to lay off 10% of their staff to reduce their OpEx.

But I guess you play the hand you dealt.

I saw that too and wonder where that 10% layoff will be - given past performance, I'd expect the call centre and web support, so that redeeming/changing awards will become even more difficult and constrained to tighter time windows.

But obviously Aimia sees the need to preserve cash as they go through the next 3 years in reworking the program less AC.

Until they show some concrete developments in terms of new partnership deals, etc., this empty rhetoric will do little to alleviate the well-founded concerns of their membership.

The main question is, IMO, what their customer base will be. I expect them to lose pretty much everyone who actually flying AC, and a bunch of high end CC customers, as they will directly deal with AC's new FF. If AP only gets its customers from retails, then they are just like Air Miles.

High end spenders typically spend with American Express - so I suspect the high end spender will either choose a card that is affiliated with AMEX and with the new Air Canada post 2020 program, or simply stay with Membership Rewards. Lots of unknowns though - because we don't know if there will be a conversion path from Membership Rewards to Air Canada's new program.

Too many unknowns at this point but it's fun to speculate.

I am banking/hoping/assuming that you will be able to go MR->Altitude come 2020.

That is where I am currently parking my points, whenever I can.

As am I - just changed my primary card from Aeroplan to MR with Amex. No real risk in the short term since we can still convert 1:1 if I need them, but gives me more options in 2020. Even if there is no MR to Altitude conversion.

A strategy I am now transitioning to as well.

I would say "expecting."

However it's 1:1 vs. 1.5:1 for Aeroplan Plat. Sitting on only around 170 k miles and planning to use the miles whenever it works at a reasonable value, I see no rush to switch. My wife can get E50 as my selection so she can use the miles.

Okay, can you high-flying guys please explain what is "MR to Altitude conversion", and what you mean by "my wife can get E50 as my selection so she can use the miles"--is there a way to move miles that I don't know about? (One of my pet peeves with FF programs is spouses not being able to consolidate.)

MR = Membership Rewards points. Eg points earned using American Express charge cards (Gold/Platinum)

Super elite members can give Elite 50K status to someone of their choice. In this case, these individuals are choosing to give their partner Elite 50K.

Thanks for the Elite explanation. I know what MR means, I too am sitting on mine right now. But what is MR to Altitude conversion?

You can convert your Amex MRs to various travel partners at certain conversion rates (e.g.. 1:1 or less)

Aeroplan is below. And here is the link

Just to be clear, I believe the reference to MR > Altitude was with respect to an assumed or expected ability to transfer Amex MR to the "new AC Frequent Flyer program" come 2020, assuming it is linked to the existing AC Altitude status program. Right now it is MR > Aeroplan, which although it shares the same points pool with Altitude doesn't provide "real" status benefits with AC and Star Alliance.

Right, but as you say, we're not in 2020 yet so I provided the answer to what I assumed the question was "What's available right now?", and the answer is Aeroplan, not Altitude.

IMHO, and related to this, it's also a bit of a time waster for anyone to guess which financial partners the "new" program will choose, or which banks will really want the business.
