For the relatively small difference, I would be inclined to take the cash. I already have a bunch of non-expiring COVID vouchers, and the amount of hassle that things like this introduce makes them feel a lot less valuable, and from a time value of money perspective, they're not good.

This wasn't "announced". Possibly because I cut them off before they finished the announcement :)

They told me it was $1550 before the process was done, but when it came time to select, they just showed me their screen.

I agree 200 USD isn't a "ton", but the idea that I can't spend this on top of my 5k wallet balance in the next 12 months is preposterous. Only need a few J trips to eat through all of it.

If I were a FOTSG I would have taken the cash for sure.

APPR would require 900 CAD for an IDB here.

DOT... oh that's why it's $1550 (as I just Googled it).

400% of one-way fare (airlines may limit the compensation to $1,550 if 400% of the one-way fare is higher than $1,550)
But that's still IDB compensation. VDB can be whatever the negotiate. But I'm not going to complain.

I guess my one-way fare was close to 900 CAD.

If they processed me as IDB, that's really bad when it comes to DOT reports.

Okay I've updated the wiki with a more recent photo of one of the receipts, along with the restrictions (a combination of what it says, and what the res agent told me when I called to clarify):

Restrictions:
1. Can only be used over the phone
2. Only applies to base fares (not YQ, not taxes/fees)
3. Can be used to book a ticket in anyone's name
4. Can be used multiple times
5. Expiry date of 2 years (even though it says 1), but you can call to get it reactivated after that

Quick data point from YYC to YVR on AC 225 FEB 25

Flight Oversold in Y and J

Offering $400 in credits or $300 in cheque. Too low for my tastebuds but seems they got the 3 people they needed.

Later rebooked into AC 219

159 YYZ-YYC tonight. They offered a bit over $2000 to volunteers. Plane had been switched from a 788 to a 321 a few weeks back.

However they only asked for something like 8 or 9 volunteers and left another 15/20 people behind, not sure why some but not others.

Now here is what’s new to me: the gate agent said the people left behind would not qualify for compensation “because there had been a plane switch.”

Seems AC now gets their employees to lie through their teeth to save them money…

I thought AC doesn’t oversell J?

They don't, but J can become overbooked for a few reasons, e.g. downgauge (not the case here), last-minute deadheading pilot, inoperative seat, etc.

This did not impact me, but there was VDB comp announcement for a flight I was about to board yesterday - AC109 YYZ-YVR on 08-Jul-24 at 09:50.

Comp offered was $400 (did not hear if this was cash or credit) plus meal vouchers for pax willing to be rebooked on a later flight around 17:00 on the same day.

Talking to some Zone 1 pax, an earlier 7M8 flight had been cancelled and, even with upguage from a 788 to 77L, the GA was still looking to shed 18 pax.

guessaaa Aug 9, 2024 9:25 pm

YYZ-CDG two weeks ago was offering $2400 for 3 seats. Volunteers to be routed via YUL the next day.

canadiancow Aug 11, 2024 10:20 am

YWG-YVR was overbooked by 6 today (though I believe they only needed 4 seats in the end).

They really went with first come first served, so unfortunately only one of my party was able to jump on it. I tried to push to prioritize the SE, but I guess taking a volunteer from J is also more work for them.

So now I'm flying YWG-YYZ, overnighting, and YYZ-SFO tomorrow morning.

Hotel will be provided if no space opens on today's YYZ-SFO flights (I mostly want that, but otherwise it's dinner with the father, so not a big deal).

$1800 CAD cash or $2000 CAD voucher. I took the voucher.

Edit: Space opened on a YYZ-SFO tonight, so it's still dinner with father, but I am getting home tonight.

AC 109 YYZ-YVR is oversold today. 9 on the standby list but not sure how many they are actually oversold. $1,200 cash or $1,400 coupon is the current offer.

First time in a while flying YYZ-YVR. Wow what a zoo.

Could be worse. Last time I did YYZ-YVR, flight was cancelled twice and I ended up geting there 13 hrs late.

What was the final offer and any idea when the bumped passengers would make it to YVR? I've got a flight on AC109 coming up so for the right price, I'd take a bit of a delay.

The IDB passengers were confirmed on the 18:45 flight which is 9 hours later. I believe that they found enough volunteers since nothing further was offered.
