FlyerTalk Forums Expert How-Tos and Guides
Last edit by: tcook052
This new annual thread has been carved out of the previous thread in an effort to reduce the number of megathreads on the AC forum. For those interested previous versions are the original 2004 - 2014 thread , 2015 edition , and 2016 edition.

The original thread started by accident but quickly became a popular place to come and discuss off topic things such as hockey, new movies, or almost anything that wouldn't fit into existing AC forum threads. More Air Canada or Aeroplan topics such as flight feedback, in-flight services issues or mileage earning/redemption are all topics that should go into existing AC forum threads so others can benefit from this information. Topics about hotels or airlines and/or their loyalty programs or should be posted elsewhere on FT as should topics better suited to other forums such as Travel Products for questions about luggage or Travel Photography for discussion about cameras.

While the conversation is more relaxed as it would be in a lounge that doesn't mean however that the FT rules don't apply her as they definitely do so please refrain from controversial topics such as politics or religion, avoid profanities and treat other lounge patrons with the same respect you expect.

+1 for Plex. Best way to download/stream your media from, well, anywhere.

Bear in mind, Sean has access to very fast and reasonably priced "upload" speeds in YVR...

Bellagio had long been one of my favourite properties, but it's obviously taking a back seat to Aria as the crown jewel of the MGM properties. Upkeep seems to be a little less than it should be and the whole property has something of a tired feel to it.

I've never stayed at Cosmopolitan, but that would probably be my next choice after Wynn / Encore. Incredible food choices, awesome bars, fantastic decor / design and insane nightlife.
+1.
Wynn is the best for quality/class. Been a while since I stayed at the Bellagio. Venetian/Palazzo is ok but so large that its now a zoo and takes a ton of time to get anywhere within the property. My current favorite is Aria - right size though not as many food choices as Venetian. You can walk from Aria/venetian to most hotels on the strip while the Wynn is slightly further away. And the Trump hotel is a dump. Just got back from CES and stayed at Trump and Aria.

It's a media server you install on your computer at home. It indexes all of your media and gives you a remotely-accessible web interface or native app (iOS, Android) to stream or download for offline use from anywhere in the world, provided the media source (your PC at home) is available.

The key thing is you need to actually have local copies of the media somewhere in order to use it with Plex. Plex on its own doesn't give you access to anything, it just helps you beam the stuff you already have around the world.

Btw -- on my sleepless YYZ-CDG I recalled the article in the G&M where they interviewed you saying you decided never to fly Y long haul again after your own sleepless TATL. I'm definitely getting there. And I'm definitely jetlagged, which is bad because I have 4 finals over the next 4 days...
If it's a fringe benefit, by all means But moving somewhere else just for an easier licence makes me think of buying J over Tango just for the extra Aeroplan miles

As for long-hauls in Y, yeah, they suck. J all the way!

ffsim had some very good points. I prefer the Venetian to the Wynn, it's just a bit more my style than Wynn. And those couple minutes closer to most stuff on the strip helps. But neither is a bad choice.

Yes, but Plex's sync feature doesn't actually delete stuff from your device after you delete it, requiring you to periodically wipe everything you've downloaded from it. Not very helpful.

yes, I love it, plex.tv as CanRulez mentioned. As they also mentioned, I do have very fast uploads with unlimited download and upload caps (1000 Mbps / 1000 Mbps). I like it because of the sync feature but also because it automatically syncs and then deleted off my iPad what has been watched so I only have unwatched content on my iPad (regardless of where I watched it - on my TV, at my GF's Place, Computer, etc) and it syncs to the iPad in the background without taking it out of my bag.

I haven't seen that bug in a long long long time, have you tried updating your server Plex install? I cycle through 100GB a week on my Sync with no problems.

I assume that's bear in mind, I live in a first world country where my entire condo building has fibre optic 1gb down, 0.1gb up and no data cap

Thanks for the link! I will check it out.

daaaayum I live in the tech capital of the woooooooooooorld sillycon valley and we don't get speeds like that (except for a few small geographical area pockets)

Then again looking at the age and quality of the houses here ... I can make a very convincing argument that I live in a third world country

Yes, "bear" in mind...typo..lol

I live in a first world country too....but here in Ontario, internet charges are very high and they also throttle your upload speeds....which reminds me, I think it's time for me to switch internet providers.

Nothing compares to South Korea when it comes to internet speeds.

I've researched it extensively and it appears they've resolved the issue for iDevices but not for Android. Those of us who don't want to be captive to Steve Jobs' vision are SOL.

Ah! It didn't occur to me that a smart individual like yourself wouldn't be using an iPad :P
