My recent experience (granted as SE) is that if my upgrade hasn't cleared by T-96, the flight is REALLY full. J4 max. Sure, this only applies to routes/dates/times I've actually booked, but it's been pretty consistent.

If I happen to be waitlisted, and someone bids $5000, I'm sure they'll get it. But that's not because they're ahead of me on the list, it's because the person or system looking at the bids says "this is a good price, let's accept it", without paying any attention to PS/PA waitlists.

Thanx for that CC. So it seems that the almighty $$ prevails tho' not really understandable as loyalty is a much more longterm and valuable asset than a one off short term hit imho. The route in question (SCL-YYZ) seems to do well up front so I'll be happy (and surprised..) if we get it. The strange thing is that we have been confirmed YYZ-YVR immediately which ime is always oversubscribed and virtually impossible to get eupgraded to. That said, we are moving from an O fare this time and usually when travelling for business my company buys the dogdirt fares. Appreciate everyone's input. Now get outside and enjoy the sunshine!

It's not so much that the $$ wins, it's that they're different systems.

I've seen flights that were J1 R1 5 days out. An eUp request would confirm that, bringing it to J0, and then when the bids are processed the next day, none would be accepted, since the flight would be J0.

And I'd rather stay inside where the air is safe to breathe :p

Recently successfully upgraded on AC874 YUL-FRA to PE for $255 (minimum was $250). My bid to upgrade on AC809 CMN-YUL to J for $590 (minimum was $585 - reduced minimum promo on this route) was unsuccessful though. Wasn't offered an upgrade on check in online, so I assume the cabin was full.

J Bid Probability

I'm flying Air Canada 787 in PE between YVR-EWR in the middle of March, I chose PE because I paid around 400€ for a one-way flight and J was asking for 820€, which is a little more than what I would like to pay for the flight.

My question is if I bid for an upgrade J for let's say 150-200€ how likely am I to get it? I suspect this is a heavy paid J passengers route but anyway I would like to confirm. I'm also *G from TAP but I do not think that could help me in any way.

What does AC say when you go to bid? They show a range with a min and max and say how strong it is.

This is assuming the flight is eligible for a bid at all.

I was able to make a bid but only bid a little above the minimum, which was 205$, so the site said the offer was weak and after checking expert flyer J cabin is already 33% sold, so my expectations of getting upgraded are very slim.

Is there any advantage to submitting a bid really early? I'm flying YVR-KIX in October in Premium Economy (N - Flex), and the recommended bid price to upgrade to J is currently pretty reasonable. But it's in October, any sense dropping a bid now, or better to wait check closer to the flight?

YUL-TPA AC Mainline
Successfully bid 250 CAD on an Economy Aeroplan reward ticket (12,500 points) to J class . Received confirmation 3 days before flight

HKG-YYZ - bid $830 CAD x2(original PE tickets), accepted. Min was $815, saw there was like J7 or something like that few days out

Upgrade Bid

Hey guys,

Quick question, I've bid for an upgrade for a YVR-EWR flight on the 14th and I still have not received any feedback from AC if the upgrade was accepted or not (they say they tell you between 72h-48h before the flight, and it is now T-36h) but I still see 3 J seats available on the flight. Is this usual? How likely am I to get a seat with 3 seats remaining (I bid 355$).

Looks like your upgrade may not have been successful if you haven’t been notified. AC typically holds some seats back for last minute sales, etc. in the last 48 hours; if those seats are still empty they’ll eUpgrade Altitude members or let the seats go empty. You can try a LMU at OLCI (f available) - when you check in see what they’re asking for LMU and please post here.

FYI AC is known to let sears in J go empty rather than sell at too low of a price.

Thank you very much for the quick reply. It's unfortunately they are willing to let the seat go empty instead of selling but oh well at least I'm in PE.

In your opinion how likely is AC of upgrading passengers from Y to PE? I'm asking because the seat map is 2-3-2 and I'm currently seated in one of the two seats but have someone seated next to me and I'm seeing the 3 middle section very empty right now and probably could snag a row without anyone in the middle of the 3 seats.

YEG USER Mar 12, 2019 7:35 pm

Very likely. AC’s Altitude members can use eUpgrades to upgrade from Y to either the J or PY cabin. Once the flight is available for check-in you can see (via AC app) how many people are waitlisted for an upgrade. Note this list only shows those who have already checked in so will grow closer to departure.

On a flight last week, minimum bid for AC342 YVR-YOW on a Flex (G) fare was 490. Didn't bid; upgrade at OLCI was 405. First time I've seen the OLCI price lower than the bid upgrade minimum!

It happens. I believe in one case someone’s slightly above minimum bid was rejected and then they paid a lower price to LMU.
