Hi everyone! Long time lurker posting for the first time here. I was just looking at the AC bid upgrade page recently and noticed that there seems to be a new section for 'instant upgrades'. Not sure if this has been discussed before but I can't seem to find any posts that relate to this new 'feature'. I'm guessing these new instant upgrades will end up coming out of the ever so elusive R space. Then again, if they charge anything like the 21 million they were asking for in the recent LMU discussion there may not be many takers. :D

Yes, I saw this too this week but none of my flights had a instant upgrade when I went to the bid pages.

First time I've seen one of these.
There was availability at T-10 when the Bid Up window opened.

Yeah it’s quite a new message, used to be t-96 for bids too...

Let's get you upgraded!

Place a bid - Make an offer to upgrade each eligible segment of your flight, then click Continue. Approximately 48 hours before your flight, we'll send you an email to let you know whether your offer was accepted.

OR

Request an Instant Upgrade (if available) - Secure your upgrade immediately and receive confirmation within 2 hours.

The bid up window is when you book the flight normally?

The Bid Upgrade email arrived at T-10. I have no idea when it appeared on the front page of the app. I don't use Bid Upgrade for my own reasons, but I am occasionally amused by where the dial lands when you click to view or bid on the offer.

My point here was that it was the first time I saw a flight that showed the Bid Upgrade not longer available.

Ah okay.

While I get AC wants more $, I don’t get these instant upgrades. Unless they are for more than the max bid (which tend to be insanely high), it would seem to be counter intuitive.

Not that anyone has actually seen the price for one yet ... I wonder if AC released the text update before the functional update.

What I don't understand is I have 3 flights comjng up where one is in a DH4 (no biz) and 2 where I'm in J already (paid J) and the app is telling me "you're available for an upgrade bid". What upgrade? I'm already in J or there are no J 😒

Lets see when we have some real examples but I suspect the 'Instant Upgrade' will cost more because you know you are getting upgraded as opposed to bid upg. I also suspect that Instant upg will be a bit scarce, likely only when J is nearly empty. Currently my sample size shows LMU being cheaper than bid upg at least for Canada and TB flights.

Right, and it can be cheaper to upfare than doing the full bid - especially if P is high as you say. A current N to P TATL is $1361; easy to bid way above that.
I wonder if you get the extra AQM and so forth, I suspect not though likely a good way of getting your AQD in.

I guess we need a new monitoring thread, when/if these start appearing.

What is/was the EF load on your flight at the time?

It said 5 J seats available, and as of right now it's still showing 5 J seats available

It will probably show up as LMU for less.

Interesting collection of data points...for those who like this stuff:

For the recent YQB Do, I had an Aeroplan X Economy ticket. At time of purchase, AC paid fares in Standard were at $700. Nuts. (Upon boarding, I discovered it was because the flight was full of visitors from California who were heading to YQB to take a cruise.)

At about T-10 days, received the email for bid up for AC 1790 YYZ-YQB. The auto-pre-set default amount was $300.

A few days prior to check-in, I looked on the app which on opening the page, showed the $300 on the dial. Since I had no intention of bidding, I didn't check to see what the lowest bid option was. Either way, it was J1.

At OLCI, this amusing amount appeared for the LMU at $419. Um, nope. lol

It was still J1. However, a few hours before departure, the 9 booked in J went to 10 booked and someone moved ahead of me on the UG list, so I slept in 17C.

For the return flight, we knew upgrade options were close to zero and the flight was full in all cabins. There was 1 seat left in J or not 3 seats (likely one of the reasons canadiancow, DrunkCargo and AmericanBovine ran to catch an earlier flight :D )

This was the bid up default offer. I ignored it of course as I was planning to Smartie Party in Y with King Chung Huang and D582. :D

At OLCI, this amusing bit appeared.

In our humble opinions, 1 hour on rouge was not worth $75. More importantly, we had Smarties.

$419! Can you believe they asked for $419 domestic J. on a 2 hour flight?

I declined.
