In my experience, sometimes yes but sometimes they tell you to go to gate. Haven't tried for a long time.

The concierges in YYZ in the lounge will interface with the gate on international flights and confirm upgrades from the lounge but they don't process them directly in my experience.

They can see where you are on the upgrade list (they might even share the details), they can do seat assignments and they can print boarding passes. They've done a combination of all those for me on various occasions.

However, I don't think they can actually process upgrades. I believe that's an automated process handled at the gate.

You believe correctly. It's automated and done at the gate

I have had upgrade processed in YVR international lounge (once) but with automated gate upgrades, I don't think that would happen anymore.

The computer processes them and any changes by a human are audited.

That's my understanding of the system.

The upgrade happens at the gate. The lounge can have visibility of the outcome by either confirming or printing out a new boarding pass.

There's quite a bit of discussion in this thread:

True ... but when there used to be concierges in the lounge, they could print out the new BP for you (after it had been processed by the system).

However these days, the concierges primary job seems to be as a call center agent, and so generally none of them are in the lounge anymore.
