My understanding has always been EF and other tools do not show actual AP reward space such as X and I classes.
Can you find any Air Canada flight that shows I or X in EF? If so, then either it's new or I just never knew about it that functionality/feature.
Hence many here simply go by R availability to inform potential (read: not guaranteed) I availability.

I'm looking at BCD. I don't have an EF account and haven't had one in awhile.

From anecdotal evidence (because nobody here has actual proof, that I am aware of), R inventory is a relatively good indicator (but not necessarily exact) of I class availability (AP J rewards).
And this has nothing to do with EF per se... it's just that EF allows us to see these numbers, no different than the BCD Availability tool as per this thread's wiki.

@WaytoomuchEurope
Thanks, TIL.
Without a tool like EF (assuming you can put alerts on I/X, which it looks like you can from WTME's screenshot)? I don't know of any other way other than calling in every day. Other reward booking experts may be able to chime in on this.
Thanks, TIL.

I now rely more on KVS for reward / mini-RTW planning and EF more for tactical purposes while travelling but if you really want to plan reward flights, having one of these tools will make your life a little simpler.

Frankly that was my primary motivator for purchasing EF originally.

R is a good indicator of IKK space. The only relation to I is that R >> I. R9 I0 is common. R0 I>0 is exceptionally rare. Yes, lots of R is a better sign than no R, but for a non-SE, I don't think it's a particularly useful fare class to bother checking.

Ugh I wrote up a reply on the train, but apparently the tunnel prevented it from getting posted.
