In 1998, I don't think so... They were still with CP then.

Good catch ... Didn't even look at the dates in the OP. Just assumed it was after the merger.

Any guesses why? The youngest plane was only 6 years old when AC took over, same age as the A340's AC was flying to HKG at the time. Was it just the general downturn in business after 9-11 that rendered them surplus?

747 was not really suited for their markets ever.

After the AC/CP merger flew YVR-HKG on a AC 343 which originated from YYZ. Also flew NRT-YVR on the x-CP 744. At that time, I was seated on the upper deck. Vaguely remember blue seats.... It was in October 2000.

During the merger AC did have 12 A343s. 2 leased from ILFC and 2 leased from GECAS.
CP had 4 744s and AC had 3 744 Combis. Out of the 4 744's one was a non-475 which was leased from GECAS, the other 3 -CP customer code of *75

I do think after the merger the 4 leased A343s and B744s left the fleet. Not sure if it 9/11 or surplus fleet after the merger...

3 of the CP 744s and 3 of the AC 74Ms were 90/91/92 vintage... The CP leased -4F6 was a 94 vintage which a PR unit which was not taken up by PR and then JL before placed with CP. Interestingly when the plane was returned to the lessor it was actually placed with PR in 2003, 9 years later...

I think it was 1996 when AC bought two A340 from the Brazil airline, cant think of it now, and after their AC make over in YUL the two planes were at the main hanger at YVR for a bit. I know this as my girl friend (wife now) and I visited my dad who was working on the conversion of these planes and we were given a tour of the new plane. AC wanted to see these before they were to buy new ones from Airbus. This was the first plane AC had crew quarters in the belly and the dead person spot. So long ago!

I checked open flights for the same time and I had 767-200ER with seats up GH and the combi did go to LHR/FRA

AC got their first 343s in 1995. Directly from Airbus.

Since we're reminiscing about ex-CP equipment I thought I'd share this pic I took at LHR in 2000 or 2001. You can't really see it in the photo, but the "Bangladesh Airlines" was just a big white sticker on top of the old "Canadian Airlines" livery.

Also ex-YVR I used to fly quite regularly to London on CP with a DC10 (I remember quite clearly the inaugural flight when CP switched from using LGW to LHR).
