E-mail for E-tickets

I doubt that I was the first one to get this.

I just made a booking for next week and the agent asked for my e-mail address. Before we ere finished with the details, my confirmation came by e-mail instead of Fax. She also mentioned that she was doing the ticketing right from there instead of sending it off for someone to do tomorrow.

I forgot to ask what office I was dealing with, but, does the Elite line go anywhere but Montreal?

Happened to me in early Jan on a rev ticket - I got an email within minutes. The snail mail copy got to me some time later.

This is a new product called instant ticketing. It allows Reservations agents to E-mail an E-Ticket to customers. The document sent thru the E-mail system is not one that is valid for travel but it does show you that the E-Ticket has been issued. This is now only available to Revenue tickets with no launch date set for Aeroplan yet.

What exactly do you mean when you say it is not valid for travel? Isn't the same true of the "official" e-ticket receipt - the one sent by fax?

The emailed receipt is valid for travel only within Canada. It is not yet accepted as a valid document for travel when going to the US or international. These latter two must also be followed up by either a faxed copy or a mailed copy of the receipt.

I still don't understand. Accepted by whom? I've travelled on e-tickets 100+ times and I've never once been asked to produce the paper receipt. What makes it a "valid" document? It has to be faxed? You mean I could print my e-mail message and then fax it to myself and it becomes valid?

Ok I understand now. The hold-up on the legality of these documents has always been the customs and immigration people. The faxed receipts were a problem with the border people when they first came out also and many people had trouble until Canada Customs and INS people got acquainted with e-tix.

I was wondering since I have to turn the laptop on a Security, if now I also have to switch it on at checkin and at the bording point just to show the receipt .

E-Ticket Keeps Getting Better - Receipts Now E-mailed. Customers have a new delivery option for their E-Ticket itinerary and receipt. Formerly mailed, faxed or picked up at the airport, these documents can now be e-mailed instantly to any e-mail address. While the e-mail is considered a legal travel document in Canada, customers travelling to the US and other international destinations will also be required to provide a paper copy - mail, fax or airport pick-up. This improvement is part of a larger product called Instant E-Ticket that also allows Reservation agents to debit a customer's credit card and issue the ET while they are still on the phone! The next phase will enable agents to make pricing changes and issue refunds.
