Yes, except Switzerland isn't part of the EU and the carriers charge an arm and a leg for roaming (either EU carrier using a Swiss network, or vice versa).

Regardless, an airport lounge requiring the use of your phone for anything seems like a bad idea.
For Canadian phone plans, receiving SMS while roaming abroad is free only if you've got a foreign text plan on your account. For example, Rogers has "travel packs" where you pre-pay for a number of texts. If you have one of those, received texts are free. Even if you have an unlimited worldwide text plan at home it will cost you to send and receive while roaming without an add-on.

Lots of places in Europe use SMS confirmation to register for stuff. Seems very common over there, I've run into it in the UK and Italy within the last year.

It is on the third floor.
I'm not sure I'd call a smoking room a "feature". More like an "enhancement"

.
That's (relatively) new then. I was with Rogers until around summer 2011, and at that time, as long as you had any (non-roaming) text plan, incoming texts were free while roaming.

That is new...
I have Rogers prepaid, and receiving SMS overseas is free (providing I have the most basic text plan)

I believe the International SMS packs only apply to sending texts from overseas, not receiving texts while overseas. However, as with all providers, call to confirm what your plan include.

This is ONE hell of a weird sentence. ZRH is one of the best airports to transit. I assume you've never been to FRA, LHR, CDG, MAD, and the likes?

Madisoncat: There are plenty of threads about what to do in ZRH on a day stay, especially in the M&M forum. Check this one for an overview:

Or google: "site:flyertalk.com zrh layover"

Maybe it's just "old". My wife's been charged a few times for received texts when she hasn't had a roaming text plan, but her Rogers plan is a really old retention one.

great place to have a long lay-over, the city is easy accesible by train, get a ticket and with in 10 - 15 min your at zurich main staion. buy a return ticket airport - main station , and it is good for 24 hrs , including trams and buses in the central part of zurich. Form the main staion ther are alot a things easy to reach by foot, Lake zurich about 15 min walk, or the shopping mile "Bahnhof strasse" is right next to that train staion, go for a stroll thru the "Niederdorf" lots of places to eat and drink. or visit some of the old Buildings. is easy to spend a few hrs... enjoy
