Maybe it has something to do with status? I'm only a regular preferred guest plus with a SPG Amex.

Just called and convert my 20K AVENTURA points over to AP, that will be my 150K to get my 40K bonus.
This year seems to be good year to get AP miles, at least for me. From 50K Marriott Q1 MegaMiles promo to the Star Challenge, and now this conversion promo mainly from all the sign-up bonus off CC that I had been applying for last 6 months.
Once everything hit my account, I will have 400K for the first time, usually I used up my points pretty quickly. Along with the miles on my wife and daughter accounts, and assuming AP not going to raise the miles from 75K Y Rewards, I now have enough AP for my annual X'Mas HKG trip until 2014. I am very happy.

I'm not clear on this and I hope someone can clarify. I have about 39k amex points. I don't have any other points to transfer, only amex.
If I get to 40k and transfer will I get 8k bonus (20k x 2) or is it capped at 4k bonus? There's no way I'll get to 50k so if it is capped 4k bonus for less than 50k xfer I might as well only transfer 20k and hope there's another promo in the fall.

In short, just transfer 20K (to get 24K AE)
unless you'll earn 11K by mid-June to transfer 50K (to get 60K AE)
no extra bonus between 20K and 50K

For 5,000 miles -> get 1,000 bonus miles
10,000 miles -> 2,000 bonus miles
20,000 miles -> 4,000 bonus miles
50,000 miles -> 10,000 bonus miles
So, I guess you either just transfer 20K and get 4K bonus. If you want more, you will need to apply another card (refer yourself in AMEX) or spend 5.5K to 11K (not sure what card you have) and get to 50K for the 10K bonus.
Double check what other accounts you have as points.com transfer miles count too.
