I just did the YYZ-SIN route and returned last week. I flew YYZ-YVR-HKG-SIN, used eUpgrades to upgrade on YYZ-YVR (at the gate) and YVR-HKG (Upgrade confirmed 4 days before departure) 17 eUpgrades for that journey
As I reached my next threshold, I received another 10eUpgrades credits, which allowed me to upgrade on the return and again got HKG-YVR upgrade confirmed 4 days before departure and got by YVR-YYZ confirmed at the gate. I did have a 6 hr layover in YVR.
My HKG-SIN-HKG sectors were booked under SQ flight numbers in 'L' class I believe to get the 100% mileage accrual... Booked it through a travel agent....

Healthwise, I find connecting through HKG much more pleasent than NRT, PVG, or PEK for the simple reason of its location.
If I'm travelling all in one day, a 3.5 hour flight against a long one is much nicer to me than a 7hr one against a long one.
The HKG airport is groovy too.
My preference.

The reason(s) I do YYZ-NRT-SIN is because:
1. Gives one of the highest mileage with a shorter travel time (approx 9403mi HKG vs 9736mi NRT)
2. Like some more SQ time than 3 hours...... (with 7 hours I can complete approx 2 movies and some time on a more superior IFE system)
3. I like the Japanese meals
4. I personally find the Japanese passengers tend to keep their washrooms/surroundings cleaner. Also they are more courteous.
5. I like the NRT lounge (showers, noodles, soup) as opposed to HKG...... lounges so/so and the SQ one doesn't even have washrooms.
6. I find NRT airport is less congested than HKG
7. For AC/SQ connection, the walk @ NRT is shorter
8. I cant sit for long, so a split mid way is perfect....... (not sure why but after mid flight i start counting down the time)
9. Easier to use E-upgrades

I believe Oct 13 was the day the FA's were supposed to go on strike...
Flying YYZ-YVR-HKG-SIN netted me 10,060 miles one way...
I preferred the HKG stopover personally due to the ability to get upgraded on a longer sector.... YYZ-YVR-HKG ~ 17h30 in J on the Westbound

I flew YYZ-YVR-HKG on Oct 5 and the J cabin was full on the YVR-HKG sector. Returned on HKG-YVR-YYZ on Oct 12. HKG-YVR was only 50%~60% in J. YVR-YYZ on the AC 156 (B763) flight was full in J.

5. Like the food at NH's NRT lounges but can't compete with SQ's fully-loaded offerings at HKG. However, I agree that the NRT NH lounges themselves are better than the somewhat stuffy area of the HKG SKL. Plus you get washrooms, showers and very clean smoking rooms. Some of the lounge attendants at NRT are very pretty, too!
9. This is the big one, really. Ex-YYZ it's a decently long flight without too much loads in contrast to the flights from YVR.

if i recall for a 2 stopper, the longest is via LAX or SFO followed by NRT, HKG or ICN.
but then to net the longest AC J, your route would be correct

Not quite on subject here, but I've been 5 times in Singapore over the last 18 months and I am quite sure that the Air Canada website showed routes from YQB to SIN.
I need to go back in a few weeks and now that same search comes up empty and asks to call in. I don't mind calling in, just wondering what changed.
YYZ-SIN works ok. YUL-SIN also.
Thanks,
Keops

If I had known that I had no chance of getting J using eUpgrades, I would have opted for SQ via LAX or SFO. One thing about SQ I noticed was the huge fuel surcharge they are tagging on. Usually SQ tickets are about $1900 ai for Q Class (No mileage) and probably another $200 more for W class (for 100% Mileage) vs less than $1500 for AC flights via HKG, NRT, PVG or PEK with 100 Mileage... I guess if you want to fly longer in SQ, be prepared to pay the premium....

It was either flying longer in SQ in Y vs AC in J using eUpgrades. I did take a risk with the latter and I was lucky.

Through Expedia I note an E class fare for around $1,200. I'm assuming if I fly via NRT that maps to Tango Plus but if I go through PVG or HKG it will be non-upgradeable Tango - correct?
