Aeroplan to hike travel points requirements
The Globe and Mail is reporting that Aeroplan will be raising the number of points for travel redemption (eg long-haul NA to be raised to 50K from 40K).

Another reduction to the value of membership. Having recently booked a reward ticket that required +$600 in fees I'm wondering when my breaking point will come...

Well.....it will be an easy decision now when my wife's Aeroplan Visa comes up for renewal in the summer. She'll be dumping it. I dumped my Aventura Visa last year when the renewal came up.
I'll wager CIBC is not too happy with these point increases. They will have customers like me who won't renew and there will be other customers who redirect their spending to other cards (TD Travel Visa in my case).
We'll use our accumulated Aeropeso points up and then just use the dollars accumulated in the TD Travel Visa to pay for flights (and car rentals, and hotels, and train tickets and hotels.....)

The new fees for 1P Gold (50k) are reasonable
$25 change fee = great!, down from $150, and better than AE's $90.
Date/flight changes still free if routing is same
$100 cancel fee = $50 decrease
$25 close in fee <21 days, sucks, but not that big of a deal.
Add to that one-ways at half price, and an MPM15 routing allowance.
The only negative is that if you fly almost exclusively on Air Canada, you are a nobody beyond the published privilidges of Star Gold.

I have been expecting this ever since LH 'enhanced' their M&M redemptions several months ago.
It is unfortunate, that it comes at the time when pax have to absorb horrendous surcharges of all kinds as well.

People, start cancelling your CIBC Aeroplan CC cards
Darn, should've used up my points way faster, now it's too late, with every mile expiring in 2013
and their math sucks

Groupe Aeroplan (TSX:AER), the loyalty points program operator behind the popular Aeroplan card, says it's boosting the required amount of points by an average of just under five per cent starting July 15.
The changes will include increasing the points needed for a long-haul business-class flight within North America to 50,000 points from the previous 40,000 points on Air Canada flights.
The required number of points to fly business class to both Middle Eastern and Australian destinations will rise by 20,000 points to 135,000 points.
There were smaller changes to economy class point requirements as well, with a flight to Mexico on Air Canada rising to 40,000 points from 35,000.

Increasing the requirement from 40000 pts to 50000 pts is a 25% increase for the popular North American long-haul flights. The Australian and Middle East runs went up by 17%. So much for a reported just-under 5% average increase.
