The food and wine in Cape Town is wonderful for what it is, but even the very best places (such as La Colombe - where I lunched on Saturday, and rated the No.1 in South Africa in one of the above links) are not of the same level of sophistication as the best London restaurants (e.g. The Capital, Pied-a-Terre, Tom Aikens, GR at RHR) let alone the best in Bray.

Cape Town is great for beautifully cooked and very high quality fish, shellfish and game; often eaten al fresco and in delightful surroudings. It's still hard to spend more than about �35 per head on a meal even in the very top places, and the style of dining is so light and relaxed that it is safe to plan to eat both lunch and dinner in a top-flight restaurant every day.

More votes for Codfather (and the butterfish, stunning) and Baia. There was also an excellent Italian just north of the Bo Kapp, but I cannot remember the name.

La Colombe in Constantia Uitsig is the Best there is in Cape Town. 5 Flies also good.

Agreed it won't do any harm to book some of the top places a week or so ahead, but a good hotel or other contact can usually pull some strings. La Colombe claimed to be booked up for the next two weeks, but a friend managed to make a table appear at a day's notice.

I found it was very good when I dined there on Friday.

Another vote for the Codfather in Camps Bay, and also for Belthazar on the Waterfront.

Caveau is quite a cool little deli/sushi/wine bar too.

Surprised no one has mentioned the Roundhouse yet - the latest "in" place in our terminally trend seeking city. Excellent food which you can have with wonderfully chosen paired wines on a per course basis. They did hike their prices a bit alarmingly recently so I won't be going back in a hurry - but like LeisureFirst said the prices will hardly shock those used to London prices. Still, under 50 quid for 4 courses with paired wines and tip.

95 Keerom is one of my favourites - basic Italian food prepared with care and respect for the ingredients.

try either five flies in CBD or beluga which is kinda down by the waterfront.

Blues, Savoy Cabbage and La Colombe all good. Restaurants at the Vineyard Hotel in Newlands are also worth a visit. Cape Grace restaurant used to be excellent but thought it had gone down hill the last time I was there (though might have just been an off night).

Just to try and make this thread a little BA-specific -- I think there's still pretty good First award availability to CPT over the next few weeks/month and Club is popping up too.

We hired a car for the fortnight and got out and about and there are a couple of blinding restaurants in Franschoek.

Le Bon Vivant is a delightful restaurant off the main drag and the food and wine was excellent and not expensive.

La Petite Ferme is situated on the side of a hill overlooking the town and has spectacular views and again, fantastic food and wine. This place gets busy so there may be a wait for a table but you can wait on the lawns outside enjoying a wine or champers with spectacular views.

Back in CT as stated above is Mitchells for the nearest thing to real ale you will find in SA and the bar grub (I recommend the spicy pizza) is pretty good.

A good boozer with a simple menu but huge portions is The Perserverence Tavern on Buitenkant Street. The beer is good and the surf and turf is excellent. Its very popular with ex pats and UK sports take precedence on the televisions if UK national sides are playing.

Vietnamese food and Sushi can be found at Saigon on the corner of Kloof and Camp Streets in the Gardens area. It was a short walk from where we were staying and ended up eating there twice.

More pricey but excellent service and fantastic wines Sevruga on the V & A Waterfront. We used this on our last night there and wished we'd gone earlier in the holiday so we could dine there twice!!

We loved the whole CT experience so much we've taken advantage of the miles offer and 241 and going back in F again next year.
