Aer Lingus takeover by IAG

Executive summary: Rumours of IAG (International Consolidated Airlines Group, British Airways, IAG Cargo, Iberia and Vueling - Link to Wikipedia article) interest in acquiring EI strengthened in December 2014, with refusals and objections by then 29% owner Ryanair, EI Board of Directors and some Irish government leaders (a 25% stake was held by the Irish government).

Aer Lingus, currently headed by CEO Stephen Kavanagh, was acquired by IAG for €1.36bn in 2015; IAG took full control of Aer Lingus on 02 Sep 2015.

Aer Lingus is working to join the oneworld airline alliance and plans to expand service to the U.S. later this year and next, CEO Stephen Kavanagh said Wednesday.

...Aer Lingus will strive to join the oneworld alliance that counts British Airways and American Airlines among its founding members.

“There are some advantages to joining the big-boys’ club,” Kavanagh said. While Avios will be a competitive tool, “ultimately, we believe that will result in our joining again oneworld,” he said.

Aer Lingus is on target to join the OneWorld alliance next year (2017), when it should also be able to benefit from BA's joint venture with American Airlines.

"The next big integration issue will be Aer Lingus coming into the joint business on the transatlantic. That will require some systems changes," said (IAG CEO) Mr Walsh.

On 26 May 2015, after months of negotiations on a possible IAG takeover, the Irish government agreed to sell its 25% stake in the company. Ryanair retained a 30% stake in Aer Lingus which it agreed to sell to IAG on 10 July 2015 for €2.55 per share. In August 2015, Aer Lingus' shareholders officially accepted IAG's takeover offer. IAG subsequently assumed control of Aer Lingus on 2 September 2015.

But I use Cwmru when talking to Welsh speakers along with my other Welsh vocabulary to show respect for the Language and culture, as far as I am aware it has so far been appreciated if not cause for amusement.

I have always considered it good manners to make an attempt with the local language.

Just our of curiosity (and to get this thread back on topic) is the main political factors actually about connectivity or is it about an iconic Irish brand being taken over by a foreign company?

Was in middle of booking flight on EI website to London 19th May.

Usually fly to LHR but selected all london airport search.

Noticed EI selling seats to LCY. example EI8361 DUB to LCY 07:00 Operated by "China Northern Airlines" but when checked history on flightradar its actually the BA4461 on the E70.

Maybe takeover is a done deal!

CJ was the IATA code for the now-defunct China Northern Airlines; it is currently assigned to the BA subsidiary, BA Cityflyer. Though of course it doesn't operate any flights using the CJ code. These flights are run by BA Cityflyer, not BA mainline, so it is technically correct that the operating airline is CJ, even if they don't really jse that code themselves at all, instead using the BA code (sort of like, when CityJet was an Air France subsidiary, thheir own WX code was "suppressed", and their flights generally only carried AF/KL flightcodes).

It is not *that* unusual to see this sort of confusion when old/obscure/unused IATA codes are fed i to the system.

the Financial Times quotes WW in an article that seems upbeat about a positive outcome; and suggests the 5 year vs 10 year guarantee standoff may be compromised to a 7-year guarantee:

Seems like EI-BA looks likelier and likelier as days pass by.

And surprisingly short for a discussion I'd thought would be very protracted! I honestly thought it would mean another 2 years before the deal was closed.

I guess it's good - especially for EI to grow.

I've never actually heard anyone, British or otherwise, use "Eire" in a conversation. It seems to be more something someone might put on a sign.

You mean "normal English conversation", I suspect... As opposed to, say, Geman, Finnish or Castilian.

Opposed by the usual: populists, unions, etc.?

Aer Lingus sale: Minister 'considers draft report' as saga to hit six-month mark

<snip>

Discussions between IAG and an expert group appointed to advise the Government on its bid are over and sources say there are no major differences left. The two sides had argued over a so-called guarantee on the Heathrow slots, new routes, employment commitments and the future of Cork and Shannon airports.

From RTE today, Ireland is canvassing European authorities for their initial views on the proposed sale of Aer Lingus to airline group IAG.

http://www.rte.ie/news/business/2015...-aerlingus-eu/

Feels like the Govt are too chicken to make a call, maybe trying to pull in EU in an effort to push out beyond election?

Aer Lingus sale to IAG now hinges on Ryanair

But the subject will not be on the Cabinet agenda for this week's meeting. Speaking yesterday, Mr Donohoe's spokeswoman said he has yet to receive a "final report" from the Interdepartmental Group examining the matter.
