Welcome back to the wonders of Angkor and to the as-great-as-before Sofitel Angkor

Cambodia had among the most crazy entry rules during Covid, but last november, they finally decided to become reasonable and easily accessible for vaccinated people, with only a PCR test before flying there and a rapid test on arrival at the airport & no more quarantine, money deposit to cover medical expenses and other crazy stuffs. After 3 years of absence, it was time to go back to my favorite hotel
.
Now that I have said that, the main problem is to reach Siem Reap. Preparing the trip, I was struggling to find flights and, checking on FR24, I was in total shock to discover that there was only one flight a day in REP
, on SQ to/from SIN. There are a few more options going to PNH, all inconvenient in term of timing and connection times, but then there is no more domestic flights
. My trip was in february. A few additional flights are being added at the moment and during the weeks to come and domestic flights are restarting slowly. So I took the SQ via SIN option from CDG. My SIN-REP-SIN flights had a lot of French people on them. For those of you who knows Siem Reap, you can imagine the economic catastrophe caused by the pandemic, as the city is heavily relying on tourism. Most hotels are closed, especially the huge ones where all the Chinese people on package tours are going. Same for restaurants : the nice ones along the river downtown Siem reap are all open, but in the pub street area, only a few are open. For Accor hotels, the Grand Hotel d'Angkor (Raffles) and the Ibis Style are closed, but the most important : the Sofitel is open
. The Sofitel managed to attract some domestic guests from PNH as well as some company seminars. There was one company seminar during my stay with 180 persons and for sure this is helping their business. I have to say that those people have been very discret and quiet and did not disturb at all the regular guests. Once they were gone, the occupancy was low for sure, but at least the country is reopening slowly. And it's absolutely great to visit the Angkor temples almost empty. Great pictures guaranteed.
I stayed one week (the minimum to enjoy the hotel
). I am very happy to say that the hotel is as beautiful as before and the service as perfect as before Covid. Contrarily to many hotels, there is no downgrade at all of the product and offering. Of course, the facilities are adapted to the occupancy : the main restaurant (citadelle) was open only for breakfast when the company seminar was there and then breakfast/lunch/dinner was served only at Mouhot's dream restaurant. But the menus of the different restaurants were all available. The main bar, the pool bar/lunch are open, as well as the Spa. The club Millsime is also operating normally. Depending on the number of eligible guests, they were either proposing a small buffet for canaps or they were bringing you a selection of very good freshly prepared ones (see pictures below). Turndown service is still provided.
A few of my long-time staff members are unfortunately gone for another temporary or permanent job/life, but others were still there and the welcome was as wonderful as before.
I had the great surprise to be awaited at REP airport by the hotel limousine that was offered for free to me (same for the return).

I was upgraded to Junior suite. This hotel has been extensively reviewed here so I won't add much, but I am happy to post a few new pictures to show you that the hotel is still the same, as nice as before.

The special dinner organized on the pool side for the company seminar attendees

Club Millsime / Mouhot's dream restaurant and the selection of fresh canaps bring during the happy hour cocktail time

The welcome amenity and note on arrival, and a 2nd one bring at mid-stay

A big thank you to the General Manager, Mr Pascal Tadin and all his team for their wonderful welcome and treatment and for having kept this hotel at the top during this terrible period, without any downgrading of the offer and customer experience.
For the FT readers here, it's time to book your flight to REP and your stay at Sofitel Angkor
to enjoy Angkor with very few visitors.

i had the pleasure of staying here 2 weeks ago. And after 48 hours, i extended my stay to 7 nights! Possibly the best stay at an accor property i have ever had. Both in the quality of the property, and more importantly the proactive hospitality offered by all staff is extraordinary. And this is one property where after they say, 'thank you for your loyalty' at check in, they mean it, and make you feel special for the whole stay.
I think every manager in the place introduced themselves, almost every f&b staff addressed me by name. Club staff remembered personalized requests. Did not have to show my accor plus card once!!! they all knew discount to be delivered, including pool side.
The pictures above are exactly as my experience. Post covid so refreshing to see a hotel delivery above and beyond, while the others can not cope with delivery basic services/hospitality. Yes restaurants optimized, but all menus available. Spa open. Evening Turn down service w gifts.
Already planning my return in October!!!

Great to hear (read)! Was planning a stay there later this year but previous reviewers haven't been very cheerful.
ozmouse did you use SNAs here? If so, how did it work out vis--vis extension?

I was able to use all my spa certificates and paid some with points, all without a flutter from the front desk staff.
PS. Rebooked 6 nights October!! 😎

Hehe….. am I hijacking Goldorak’s thread? ……😎
I reporting in from my junior suite, and everything is as it should be (and why would I not think otherwise). Warm welcomes all around. Early checkin not a problem. Suite upgrade as expected (but not guaranteed). Gifts. Gardens looking lush and with bird life from wet season.
happy to report things are also picking up with new faces in club and dining room, with training going on. tour group of 17 rooms booked I’m told, and we saw only at breakfast. Definitely more people at the pool, but as regular visitors know, that is a 1/4 acre of pool each 😎. I also notice online room rates back to normal as well, going forward.
Lobby bar is actually closed for renovation so mahouts doing everything from club to bar to fine dining. So that means I am just parked at my club sofa overlooking tha pond all night. Club letter says breakfast is available there, but not the case. main dining room had people in there last night.
1 night club apritifs served to table, next night buffet service for the 8! of us there. Best club food I have been served, changing daily.
also renovations in some rooms as you can here construction noise from wing overlooking fountain/library. Not a bother.
so 6 days of bliss ahead. Thank you Sofitel SR!

Another great stay at Sofitel Angkor, 7 nights. Business is certainly not back yet to normal in Siem Reap but very good signs of recovery, including at the Sofitel with solid bookings on some days. It was good to see the hotel living again. Conditions of visit of temples were still excellent as the Chinese are not back yet.
I booked a Superior room and have been upgraded to a nice and large Prestige suite
.
Living room part:

Guest toilets

Bedroom part:

The different welcome amenities bring at different parts of the stay :

All restaurants are now fully back to normal operations (last year the Citadel restaurants was closed most of the times because of low occupancy).
The Bar furnitures have been replaced and the bar now included a Champagne bar with an impressive collection of Champagnes

They also now propose some Tapas at the bar. Here is an example of what they provide !

The still beautiful private dining room adjacent to the bar.

Service at the Club Millsime was as great as before. Happy hour cocktail time is 17:30 to 19:30

The spa was very busy on some days (fully booked from early morning to late evening on several days), but I managed to find a slot
.
Service was top notch as usual. Fully committed teams usual. Excellent management from Mr Pascal Tadin.
Hotel offered me complimentary limo transfer from/to airport. A very nice touch.
For the rest, you already know everything about this paradisiac hotel

I hope you have enjoyed this new review
