A few months ago I was waiting to board a flight, cannot recall where, and one of the retro painted planes was at the next gate.

A person near me who saw the retro plane complained to his travel companion "can you believe how old their planes are. That thing must be 40 years old".

I elected not to correct him. He might not have believed me anyway.

Retro livery is such a great idea. One only need to look at Miller Lite to see how much it can do for a brand. The logo used until a few years ago was terrible. It had no character. When they went back to the old school "Lite" logo, it was a smash hit. How excited would you be to see a logo like this on your plane?

United would do well to find some classic designs and start putting out "throwback" planes. People would love them.

I agree with Salty Dog, would be awesome to see a CO Meatball, a couple of UA tulip liveries too.

And specifically, the Saul Bass.

I still love that paint job more than any other I've seen on any airline, any aircraft. (Purely an emotional attachment).

I think there is good reason for UA to stay away from more recent liveries because of the emotional attachment some have. The purpose of these retro liveries is not to stoke up livery debates or relive some still raw feelings but to reflect on the long heritage of the major branches of what today is United Airlines.

[Mod hat on]
This is not the place to debate logos -- that debate has been had multiple times -- and the community has a range of opinions. These retro threads are about spotting this interesting historical liveries.

You've got to be more specific.

The gate numbers clearly indicate LAX Terminal 7, Concourse 7, and the angle suggests the UC at gate 70A.
