Hotel Martinez (Unbound Collection) Cannes, France REVIEW - MASTER THREAD
I stick with it: sunbeds and pier should be freed after 1 hour no-show, so somebody else can use them.
Have been 2nd row on beach yesterday, as pier was closed due to an event. Not a huge fan of beach sunbeds, as it is crowded. Pier is much better!
Interested to see how my experience here compares with Marriott. I'll post how my stay went soon

Still stunning, but too beautiful to enjoy the Côte d'Azur (19 Photos)
Grand Hyatt Cannes Hotel Martinez
Returned to the historic Hotel Martinez where stars have shined since 1929 on the Côte d'Azur.
The Hotel is legendary and underwent an extensive Art Deco refurb a few years ago by Pierre-Yves Rochon.
We always book a few days here within Europe for R&R with the view of not leaving the property to counter cars, museums and galleries in other cities.
Check In
Despite the large number of rooms we were checked in swiftly and escorted to the room.
Check in is now stand up and check out sit down which isn't the most welcoming exprience.
Room
We book an Exec Suite on full points and the room was an odd configuration. While the room was large it was separated by the large wardrobe and the couch was orientated toward the wall.
For the first time in my life I found myself rearranging the furniture.
The view was of the new lap pool and garden which is a new addition. We value space, but the Junior Suite with Terrace we had last time had sea views. You can book this room or a Junior Suite for the same points amount and in future I would book the Junior Suite.
We got a bottle of Tatt as the welcome amenity and a box of chocolates.
The main negative is there is a train line directly behind the hotel and you can hear TGV and other trains throughout the day and night. While they aren't every few minutes, it's enough to wake me form sleep. The property was at 100% so there was no point asking for a different room.
Dining
Breakfast became a running joke as we ordered Eggs Benedict and they were deloivered stone cold. We sent them back and they were cold again. We asked the Manager and she arranged for luke warm ones but we started ordering Omlettes instead and had to insist they were hot.
Much of the dining experience is affected by the new and casual staff, like much of the rest of the world at the moment.
Beach Club
The standout is the Martinez Private Beach Club on the Mediterranean. Front row sunbeds are 90 Euros pp/day. We learnt to reserve at time of booking as they often sell out. The club is only available to hotel guests and many some don't know too book and are turned away.
On day one we were told they didn’t have our reservation. I politely, but firmly showed them the emails from the GM and his assistant confirming our sunbeds including the map where they were highlighted. Junior staff member said there was nothing she could do and thankfully her manager came, apologised profusely and upgraded us to a 500 Euro cabana with a bottle of Champers and fruit plate. Good service recovery.
While I do love this property on this occasion it had lost its lustre. As the playground of the rich and famous, there were lots of Gulf groups who can throw money at anything. I suspect this is what happened to our sunbeds. The beach was extremely busy and idespite it's a beautiful location, it's hard to relax amongst hundreds of other people. Some of the other groups begin playing Arabic music on their speakers which us extremely annoying!
Overall
I Will return, but probably not during Northern Summer Holidays.
There are also lots of tourists blocking the driveway taking photos of the Arab Supercars which gets annoying when entering and exiting.
Bathtubs/walk-in showers
People should be aware when booking this hotel that some rooms at this hotel only have a bathtub, and no walk-in shower.
Even the mid tier rooms like "premium" have this issue.
If you need/want a walk-in shower make sure you put this in your reservation notes, and ask again at reception before getting your room key.
Possible noise outside hotel
If your room faces the street "Rue Latour-Maubourg" (where most rooms with "partial sea views" are) you may have a lot of noise on some nights.
I was there on a SUNDAY night and the nightclub across the street was blasting really loud music until 1:00am at night. Even with the window shut and curtains drawn you could still feel the noise.
-The changing room near the pool is tiny. It's basically 1 small shower stall, 1 small toilet, and 1 small closet/changing room with no lock. For a hotel with hundreds of rooms this makes no sense. So, make sure you change in your room.
-No bathrobes at the pool, so bring your own from your room. You do get a very large towel, but have to leave it there when you leave.
-The sun loungers are only "half" seats meaning you can't fully recline them backwards, and you can't stretch out your legs cause there's nothing to put them on.
-No sun umbrellas at the pool.
-The pool is a decent size, but it's not very deep. Maybe 1 meter and half deep. Fine for swimming laps but no diving or jumping. Anymore than 15 people in the pool at one time, and it will be very crowded. Again, for such a huge hotel with hundreds of rooms why didn't they make the pool bigger, or at least wider ? The space for a larger pool is certainly there, as more than half of the courtyard wasn't used at all.
-At first I thought there weren't any steps to get in or out of the pool, but there are some in the far back where the children's section is (a squared shaped corner with very shallow water). Hard to find at first.
-The entire section all around the pool is made of wooden planks. Is this really a smart move, considering this is an area that will be constantly wet and damp ? Within a few years I can easily see that wood rotting and giving people splinters in their feet if they are are barefoot.
I appreciate the new pool area, but these practical decisions make no sense.
Maybe they did it deliberately like this hoping people would pay the high prices to use the hotel beach instead.

I will stay a weekend at the Martinez for the first time in June after a week of work in Nice.
Not really interested in booking a (super expensive) sun bed for the day or even half day. But do you also need to book super early to have lunch on the beach? And can you spend a little bit of time at your table to enjoy the beach/sea view?
Thanks!

Otherwise, I believe you can also do a half day rental for sunbeds.

Great summary. This is exactly why I had great expectations for this pool but was quickly disappointed. Maybe they don't want to take biz away from their oceanside area and plan to use this for events only.
Very nice stay overall in a Premium Sea View room:
Enjoyed lunch at la Plage du Martinez and dinner at le Sud. Great breakfast with amazing patisseries selection:
Concierge had organised all restaurant bookings and golf tee offs (at Royal Mougins and Mandelieu) ahead of arrival.
Had the nice surprise of fireworks from the room balcony on Friday (but none on Saturday):
Will be back!
Looks like they haven’t opened bookings yet (like Cannes 2 other palaces the Carlton and the Majestic but unlike all other hotels in the area or in Paris). Probably something to do with the Cannes Festival and Monaco Grand Prix happening on this month and most hotels/rooms being pre-booked by groups/brands/VIPs?
