SAA.. A330...or A340..does it matter?

Can choose between the 2 JNB-LHR flights... Is there any noticeable difference between the 2 aircraft.. The seat seems to be the same.... How about IFE etc?

Travelling in Business....

Thanks!

Seats, IFE etc are the same in J class. The A330 aircraft are all very new (within the past 2 years) - so that is likely the only (minimal) difference between the two.

The A340 is one large J cabin. The A330 is two cabins. Otherwise all the same.

Having flown both in J, if I had the choice I would do A330, brand new cabins, better IFE!

A340's are showing signs of wear now.

And where it matters:
A340 4 engines.
A330 2 engines....

I am personally ok with flying long haul with 2 engines, but I know people who are not.

the ol 'engines turn or passengers swim' rule applies.

So are the A330s. I've flown at various times on the entire A330 fleet this year and I think every single aircraft has had something or the other inoperative - ranging from IFE screens to blocked seats due to broken recline to lavatories sealed off.

That said, after having to deal with ZS-SLF (the last A340-200) a couple times this year, I'll take the A330s any day of the week!

Last time I went on an SAA A330 was between TLS and JNB, plane looked rather new.

If somehow you still end up on one of their A340-200 I'd pass on it, but A340-300 isn't too bad for an SAA flight. Given that it's London I'm pretty sure it should be an A340-600 though

Just to avoid any confusion, the A340-200 is gone, there are none left in service with SAA.

Time we kill the SAA A340-200 threads, they only cause confusion and are not a factor anymore.

ZS-SLF was very much around as recently as 2 weeks ago when I last flew through Joburg. She doesn't appear to be scheduled to anywhere regularly, but is subbed in as a spare if one of the other 330s/340s goes tech.

I've been unfortunate enough to have had her subbed in twice this year (replacing a 330 and a 346 respectively) and believe me, that plane is falling apart inside.

Yeah that's what I was referring to by if you somehow still end up on an A340-200, occasionally in the past 6 months (after they were all supposedly retired) I've seen one parked up in PER for the day before it flies back to JNB

Perth, Accra, Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo seem to be the preferred longhaul routes on which the A340-200 is substituted in my experience.

Below is the list of flights that ZS-SLF has been used on in the last few weeks. She is definitely still in service!
