Even after the double-devaluations in the past 3 years, I still find occasional sweet spots in the HH system. Enough that I keep the credit card and use it barely enough to maintain Diamond there...

Choice points are one of the best buys of the program, I purchase 40K for $170ish for use in Rome for 5 nights at $330 a night room. Not sure if the same value is available for choice hotels is still available in Europe or Asia.

There is no citizenship or residency status requirement to do these things but foreign credit cards don't always work reliably.
The Choice program only allows customers to book reward nights within 30-60 days (30 days in the US or 60 days abroad)-- if you need to plan in advance of 30-60 days (unless you have rather high elite status in the Choice program), booking the room is not generally possible using points until you are within 30-60 days of the intended stay date.

Does the booking window for that also only open within 30-60 days? If that is a way around the advanced booking limit, then more advanced planning becomes possible. Most people I know seem to like to plan their vacations with more than 30-60 days advance notice, especially for long-haul international travel. That's not me of course.

1) they close and zero out your account after 18 months of inactivity
2) all points expire on Dec 31, 2 years after you earn them... no way I know to extend them
