Flight Changes
Many changes have been made due to Etihad schedule changes. In some cases, connecting flights are being swapped to nonstops. Some have been able to get this changed back by calling Etihad, others have not. You may have to repeat call / HUCA to get it switched back.

Update 12/28/14: Etihad will honor the fare per Forbes article.

Suggestions for what to do in ...

AUH (Abu Dhabi) (Check Groupon):
Grand Mosque [wiki] [map]
Kayak the mangroves [trip advisor] [map]
Ferrari World [trip advisor] [map]
Dune bashing/camel ride [trip advisor]

Hotels:
Qsar al Sarab

CPT (Capetown):
Take cable car to top of Table Mountain
Drive the scenic drive to Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope
See Robben Island prison, home to Nelson Mandela for 18 years
V&A Waterfront
Hop-on-Hop Off Bus Cape town (brings you to all scenic landscapes of Cape town (incl Camps bay) w/o hassle and security concerns

JNB (Johannesburg):
Nelson Mandela Square (JNB) / also visit Butchers steak restaurant there
Guided tour to Soweto (JNB)

For JNB/CPT:
- use uber (safe and cheap) / if you travel to Sandton(JNB): use Gautrain from Airport. / review travel advise and do's/don'ts for traveling in JNB city.
- Tons of cheap flights btw CPT and JNB. Always use booking portals like orbitz, skyscanner, etc. to find good fares (for example on Kulula, BA, SAA, Mango, etc.)

MNL (Manila):
Ask on FT (in Destinations) - There are too many islands and beaches in the Philippines to list here.
If you fancy another destination:
$120 R/T to SIN
$175 R/T to HKG or 7500 Avios
Almost all of Asia is under $200 with LCCs

I saw that & tried to get that way at first, but hit some kind of snag (couldn't pull it up on U.S. acct. and it wouldn't let me register new UAE acct.) YMMV...could be I just didn't persist enough (was short on time). Also unsure if they'd take from a non-resident (though I s'pose expat workers are a market).

All the better if u can get to work, though.

They weighed at ORD at the counter but not AUH. Didn't see what it weighed but it apparently passed. With a rucksack or something like that the pack itself doesn't weigh much, but I was seeing a number of people with hard-shell carry-ons that got through somehow.

We flew 4 weeks ago from ORD. My wife went to the counter to get tickets, we had checked in online. Then they asked to weigh our bags so I walked up to the counter with 2 small duffel bags and 2 backpacks. 10 feet away the counter the person said ok weighted and I turned around? She printed the tickets for my wife I never even went to the counter. AUH never said a thing just checked it in US preclearance, but again we had preprinted boarding passes.
I think the key was preprinting boarding passes so you only interact with gate personnel.

On the way back, everything is on Etihad so I think I will be able to check in online and preprint. However, on the way there, the first flight is on AA. Will the AA agent in the US be able to check us in and print boarding passes for our two Etihad legs too?

On the way back, everything is on Etihad so I think I will be able to check in online and preprint. However, on the way there, the first flight is on AA. Will the AA agent in the US be able to check us in and print boarding passes for our two Etihad legs too?
I don't know but if it's in the 24 hr window couldn't you print them on Etihad's website?
Both of ours were on EY metal. The Hotel had a printer just for boarding passes.

I don't think so. Generally, you have to check in with the first operating carrier.

I searched but couldn't find any successful attempts to upgrade using miles (not bidding).

When I clink the link to 'Upgrade using your Etihad Guest Miles,' I get the error 'This booking cannot be upgraded for this itinerary.' I assume it's a similar to issue to not being able to pick a seat online. I'll call customer service to check, but just wanted to check here for any successes first.

My guess is your best bet, other than having purchased travel insurance, was not telling the airline you were sick and trying to get a refund for their "mistake fare." You're probably SOL.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I have Annual Travel Insurance.
2ndly someone from Etihad Mumbai did call me this morning at 11.45-11.50 am Mumbai time.
She has cancelled today's flights and receommended I work with the OTA (Orbitz) to reinstate the return journey ticket anytime before April 25 of next year.
Etihad does not have waivers for illness!
So I asked her if I travelled today and became seriously ill on the flight ... who would bear the costs of any diversions etc? She laughed and said Etihad of course.

If I was sick but wanted to avoid fees, I'd show up at the airport and get the airline to declare me medically unfit to fly and make the airline kick me off the flight so that I'm entitled to a refund or rebooking.

People fly ill all the time because the airlines charge ridiculous fees to rebook tickets.

If you have travel insurance, then use the insurance.

I think you're going to get a surprise when you try to rebook like change fee + fare difference. Good thing you bought insurance!

If one of my flights was changed by about 20 minutes, and there were a total of 45 minute shifts. Is that enough to warrant a change in flights?

I changed my outbound flight from EY100 to EY102 free and clear, in no more than 15 minutes on the phone including time on hold. I just asked politely and got what I wanted. Not even a hint of unpleasantness from the other side of the phone.
