UA is being VERY repetitive in hitting these transcon markets from PHL and BWI. I suspect a lot of flyertalkers are already loaded up on these. But if you missed the last sale . . . . (which I think was about 2 weeks ago!).

Short story: their systems "talk" to some degree. If you skip the first segment on a ZFV-EWR-XXX, you risk the rest of your itinerary getting canceled. You're free to drop the final EWR-ZFV leg though. However, if you do this enough times, United might get upset :-)

With e-tickets on Amtrak, UA now will cancel your flight if you don't take your scheduled train and get scanned in by the conductor. This is still an unreliable process, as my ticket was cancelled last week mid-trip even though I did take my ZFV-EWR train.
Bottom line: YES. You do need to take the train, or else your reservation will be canceled.

Also from the Flight Deal:
"[Update 5/23/2013 4:30PM Eastern - In trying to get this out as quickly as possible, we put Las Vegas as part of the sale. There is a sale for Las Vegas travel for May/June travel, but not from mid-August - March, 2014. Apologies]"

Yep, I got one at 5:25pm. Then when I went to buy another right after 5:30pm, the fare was gone. SAN-SFO-EWR-ZFV-EWR-SFO-SAN for $172.20, 6170 miles, 0.28cpm - I don't mind the red-eye at that price.
