UA flights normally arrive in Z but for some reason UA insist on referring to arrival gates in Z as A20, A21, etc. Actually A20 and Z20 are the same gate position connected to different floors. Depending on where you arrive from or where you are departing to, passengers are directed to A20 (for Schengen arrival/departure) or Z20 (for non-Schengen arrival/departure). You have to go through passport control between A gates and Z gates.

United will transfer bags to a connecting flight on your United itinerary, or on a separate itinerary that includes a Star AllianceTM partner airline flight, if the connecting flight is scheduled to depart within 12 hours after arriving at the connection city.
Checked Baggage - Connecting Flights.Don't leave the counter at SFO until they've done it.

Transfer through FRA with duty free purchase already in hand
NewbieRunner provided me some assistance on transfer time from EDI on LH and connecting to UA to IAD in FRA this summer.
My other question concerns bringing a bottle of duty free purchased Whisky from the EDI duty free. Until recently, Talisker Dark Storm was only available at duty Free shops, and my local store in the US still does not carry it (I don't think that it is yet carried in the US at all).
I know that the bottle(s) has to be specially sealed at the Duty Free store to allow me to bring onto connecting flights in the US. Will I have an issue taking the sealed Duty Free whisky from departing my LH plane in FRA and transferring to my UA flight in FRA.

65 Connection time from LH to UA
Hello,
We currently hold tickets for ATH-IST-SFO on July 5, and in light of recent events, would like to fly on LH/UA instead.
I have found the following ticket (FWIW, we are US citizens) but the 65 minute connection time makes me nervous. Just wondering if I am over-reacting or being prudent. Having gotten lost at FRA many times, I now know to just follow the signs so hopefully that will help us transit quickly.
I'm not sure if we will have to go through passport control in FRA.
LH 1279 depart ATH at 2:20 pm. Arrive FRA 4:20 pm. Odds of a bus gate?
LH 9126 (aka UA 927) departs FRA at 5:25 pm.
Thank you for any advice you can offer.

- Duty-free merchandise belong in a special sealed, tamper-evident bag (STEB)
Duty-free items purchased in shops after you pass through the boarding pass check or on board an aircraft may be carried through the security check if they are enclosed in a transparent special bag (known as a STEB) that has been sealed by the sales clerk. This bag must contain a receipt that indicates the date and place of purchase and can be read from the outside. This ensures that you can change planes at other EU airports without any hassle when carrying duty-free merchandise. It’s also important to keep the bag closed and sealed until you reach your final destination. This applies to security checks at Frankfurt Airport and all other airports in the EU, Norway, Iceland, and Switzerland.

You haven't said which class you will be travelling in but there is now priority passport control between A and Z for C, F and *G passengers.

Yes, you will have to go through passport control in FRA but no security (other than possible random checks by the gate). LH1279 arrived/will arrive at an A gate 3 times and an A bus gate once in recent days and it's impossible to say where it will arrive. UA927 will depart from a Z gate which is in the same pier as A gates but one floor above. The connection should be fine provided the flight from ATH arrives on time.

I guess it's better to be anxious about a tight connection than worry about our electronics in checked bags, which is what will happen if we stick with our current TK booking via IST.

I'm looking to travel IAD-XXX-PMI in mid-September. One option has a two hour connection in FRA (LH419/LH1152). Will that be enough time? The second option is a 3.5 hour connection in VIE (OS92/EW5912)...is that a better option?

A two hour connection in FRA should be fine. Personally I think 3.5 hours in VIE is too long, but you should choose whichever flights that suit you best.

Flying in C on LH965 EDI-FRA in July arriving 20:55 to connect with LH772 FRA-BKK departing 22:00. Assuming an on time arrival of LH965, with only a 65 min connection time what are the chances that I will make my connection and what gates will the arriving and departing flights likely use in FRA? Will BREXIT complicate matters further by changing incoming gate and result in me having to clear both immigration and security in FRA? Finally, any tips on the quickest route to take after LH965 arrival in FRA to make connection?
Thanks,
Iain

Not sure what BREXIT compliance you are referring to but the UK will not leave the EU for another two years as far as I know. Although the UK is considered a 'clean' country at German airports for security purposes, the layout of FRA does not allow any arrivals in non-Schengen B to transfer to another flight without clearing security. So you will have to clear transfer security within B between the two flights.
This is one of my major gripes about FRA. Most flights from the UK arrive at B gates or bus gates in A (ANS) which means you have to clear transfer security. However, morning flights often arrive at AEUW, a bus gate which allows passengers connecting to flights from Z (mostly to the US) to transfer without clearing passport control or security and to Schengen flights from A with just passport control. Late afternoon and evening flights from the UK sometimes arrive at Z gates which also makes connections from Z and A easier. But there's no consistency!
Now, if Scotland leaves the UK and joins Schengen, it will be a different story.

If LH965 from EDI arrives on time there should be no problem connecting to LH772 to BKK. Most flights from the UK including EDI arrive at B gates and LH772 departs from a B gate. There is no need to go through passport control but you will have to clear transfer security.
