Hyatt Place La Paz (Mexico) REVIEW - MASTER THREAD

Dear Flyertalkers,

Hyatt announced the opening of Hyatt Place La Paz, which marks the second Hyatt Place hotel to open in Mexico. The 151-guestroom hotel is located in the exclusive area of Costa Baja, 30 minutes from La Paz International Airport. Nearby activities include a beach on the Gulf of California, the 18-hole Costa Baja Golf Course designed by Gary Player, a 250-slip marina, and a variety of shops and restaurants. The hotel is also in close proximity to La Paz’s historic downtown, Todos Santos Magic Town and Espiritu Santo Island, a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Guests will enjoy the brand's consistent guest experience and around-the-clock services, such as free wifi everywhere, 24/7 Gallery Menu & Market, 24-hour StayFit Gym, and more.

I just came from a fantastic stay here. All of the staff were extremely helpful and accommodating, whether providing concierge-type services at the front desk or opening the bar late for me.

The rooms are just like every other Hyatt Place; the only downside is that the rooms don't have balconies and the windows don't open, which is a shame given the fantastic weather and views.

The hotel is part of the apparently brand-new Costabaja development, consisting of a full-service resort in addition to the Hyatt Place, residences, a golf course, and a marina. (Contrary to the web site, there is no beach really close by, though there are public beaches a short taxi ride away.)

The development is on the edge of town, around 10 minutes from the malecon and 30 minutes from the airport, but there are always taxis available.

The hotel is in somewhat of an isolated area north of town making it really ideal for visiting Playa Balandra. They offered 4pm Globalist checkout but we'd already booked a night more than we needed since rooms were only 3500 points per night. Upgraded from base points room to a harbor view room which actually had nice views for a Hyatt Place.

How did you guys decide to get to La Paz? Fly in directly? Van/bus/car from Cabo?
Was it easy to get around La Paz itself? Maybe the property has bicycles or something?

We stayed here last year. It was part of an extended trip within the Baja peninsula. We flew into Cabo, got a rental car, then eventually drove to La Paz.

I guess you have to qualify "is it easy to get around La Paz itself?" I mean, once in downtown La Paz, it's very easy to get around. Its a pretty compact city and its certainly walkable. That said, the Hyatt Place is definitely pretty far outside of the action/main town. It's probably a 15 minute drive into town (walking from the HP to downtown is about 5 miles to give context) and then, depending on the season, finding parking can be a bit challenging (though we generally always did eventually find parking). That was really my only beef with the place (being far outside the "action" that is). Other than that, what can you say, its a Hyatt Place and it feels like it. It feels like a Hyatt Place in Waco, Texas or Topeka, Kansas. It does have a little bit more substantial breakfast than a US based Hyatt place and the price for the room was certainly quite cheap. On the whole, not a super inspirational property, but frankly there just aren't that many hotel options there and so it was fine.

We actually really enjoyed La Paz itself, much cheaper for things like dining, etc. than Cabo (actually, just everything is more affordable). But on the whole, the Hyatt Place just is what it is; cheap, and pretty far outside of town. Given it's about a five mile walk to town, you really kind of need a rental car in IMHO. Can't speak to whether the HP had bikes or not, but don't recall seeing any.

Regards

Rented a car from Cactus and drove the route through Todos Santos. There were always taxis in front of the hotel but there might have been a convention or something at the hotel during our stay. Didn't notice any bicycles.

Ummm... any context or further info? When we last stayed there is was absolutely packed.

It has indeed been removed from the Hyatt website already. This happened very suddenly...

Found a review article that has a one line entry mentioning that as of April 10 it is being rebranded to a Courtyard. No additional info though.

Marriott's website lists a new Courtyard La Paz Baja California Sur opening September 2024. Looks to be the same location as the former HP La Paz.

It's a bummer to lose this property. It was nothing magical (a bit outside of town but we always have a rental car) but it was serviceable and we often got very low rates (sometimes sub $100 per night). My wife is Marriott Titanium so I suppose we may still use it once it reopens as CY.
