I never heard of Alexander Murray & Company.

Has anyone tried it?

OK, I passed by a Trader Joe's earlier today and got a bottle. I made a slight mistake about the price in my earlier post, it is $25.99.

Will follow up after opening the bottle.

only single malt scotch I'm seeing at Costco (a number of stores in Chicago area) is a Kirkland 20 yr old Speyside for ~$44 (no mention of distillery on bottle that I can see)

I got it at the one near LAX, at 8645 South Sepulveda Blvd. However, I have seen it at several TJ stores.

Lax layover: In-N-Out, Trader Joe.
Thanks, we can compare notes in the new year!

Very smooth with just the slightest hint of smoke and tons of vanilla. All in all, a very drinkable Scotch. Not my favorite, but excellent value for the price.

Pretty sure only the cheapest of the three (Spice Road) is out now. I would be curious to hear what people have to say about it...but I expect like most JW varieties it will be under-proof, chill filtered and loaded with caramel coloring. And for ~$45/liter I wouldn't expect it to be remarkable.

Smoother and maybe a bit less salty and more smokey. Not sure about twice as much.

OK, thanks. I think I'll see if I can find a tasting event rather than just jumping in.

Just got back from my neighborhood CostCo and the following whiskeys were available:

Lagavulin 16 yo - $56 (typically around $70),
Kirkland 15 yo (Macallan) $50
Kirkland 20 yo Speyside - $45
JW Blue - $128
Usquaebach Old Rare? Stone flask - $100

The price on the Lag is very good.
Don't know anything about the Usquaebach other than it's blended. Anyone try it? Maybe this will be my test whiskey.

EDIT: They also have Oban and Jura and some others, obviously.

Last edited by uszkanni; Dec 23, 2012 at 1:14 am Reason: figured out which Usquaebach it was, I think

SAVEUR Magazine describes it as follows:
Smoke and butterscotch, dried fruit and leather: This delicious spirit is what happens when you take an amply peated whisky from the Islay region of Scotland and age it in sherry casks, which imparts a deep amber hue and a winey suppleness. A special bottling that's not much costlier than the distillery's 16-year-old single malt, this is a scotch for the end of the evening, for contemplative moments, for a treat.

Thanks for the link. The Lag DE seems to be very dependent on bottling; some years are rated well, others not. Think I'll pass on it unless there is a tasting event (and corresponding inventory).

Also not particularly inspired by reviews on the interwebs to try the Usquaebach; especially with nose/palate of sherry and fruit and mouth feels described as "slithery" and "oily." Doesn't sound like my cup of "tea."
