My wife has more than 20,000 HSBC premier points.

Whats can she do with these to maximise then? Transfer to another rewards program?

Here's the catalog: http://premiercardbenefits.com/1/PA_...66MKT_0005.pdf

Choose what you think is the best use of your points.

I think you're asking a two part question...

For the points you already have, it doesn't matter. It is what it is.

For the future: How many points do you earn per dollar?

EDIT: Looks like 1 point per dollar, according to the link above. That would make an airline redemption about 1.67% rebate on your spending. Not great.

There are links to some 2% cash back cards in the forums here, as well as cards with categories of spend as high as 5% cash back, plus plenty of cards that offer up to 3 airline miles per dollar - which can easily equate to 6% back.

Keep in mind you also earn miles on the airline redemption.

So if you book a transpac flight for $1200 or 72,000 points, then you could get back 15,000 miles in your FF program. Valuing those miles at 1.5 cents each, that's $225. So the 72k points reward now becomes worth $1425, or a 2% rebate.

So for daily spending, it's actually pretty decent, since most airline cards earn 1 mile/$1, which is a 1.5% rebate.

If I live in the UK and have UK citizenship, can I still set up an account in another country?

Generally you'd set up a Premier account in the UK first. Once that's set up they can assist you in opening an account in another country. The minimum relationship balance in such a situation would only apply to your UK account.

In my case, my primary account is in Canada so the minimum relationship balance is CAD 100 000.00. I subsequently opened an account in the USA, but only keep about $50 in that account on a regular basis. For a number of reasons I've avoided opening a Premier account in Hong Kong, but if I do there will be no minimum balance on that account either.

5. Points can be transferred to airline frequent flyer programmes. To start they will be partnering with Cathay Pacific, British Airways and Singapore Airlines.

Any other comments on these proposed changes?
ah these sound like useful improvements - but the programme varies by country of issue afaik, or are they aligning the lot under one system now? in particular the travel insurance seems different, mainly due to variations in local providers... any news on an expanded lounge set?

And why is this a good card to use?

It sounds most uncompetitive for usa based customers.

Now it's worse than 1% travel rebate!!

And only three airlines available to transfer.

why this over almost any other rewards card on market?

I am perplexed.

Since it's a survey, I'm not sure if they will implement all these changes.

writetorich: It's a good backup travel card. And the flight insurance used to be good, at 1 MM.
