This thread is a continuation of the discussion posted here from 12.08.2012 - 5.13.2014: Barclays Arrival/Arrival Cards (1.05%/2.1% travel credits)

Current offer for Arrival Plus is 70K pts w/$5K spend & AF waived 1st year.

Barclays says that you earn “miles” but you’re actually earning cash back with the card since you can’t transfer your Barclays miles to airlines. But you can redeem them for statement credits at 0.5 cents per mile (poor value) or 1.05 cent per mile if you redeem for travel.

You get 5% of your miles back if you redeem for travel, so 40,000 miles gets you $400 towards travel and 2,000 miles back (5% of your miles back). You must have at least 10K 'miles' in your acct if you wish to redeem as a travel credit. 2500 'miles' can be redeemed for a stmt credit though.

If you want, you can redeem miles to cover a portion of a travel charge instead of the full amount. For example, if you have 80k miles and a $740 airline charge, you can choose to redeem just 70k to cover $700 of the charge.

You earn 2X miles on all purchases, so you’re effectively getting 2% cash back for each purchase. But since you get 5% of your miles back when you redeem for travel, this is effectively a 2.1% cash back card when miles are redeemed for travel.

This makes the Barclaycard Arrival PlusTM World Elite MasterCard® (with 2.1% cash back for travel) better than the Capital One Venture card which offers only 2 miles per $1 or 2% cash back, only if you spend $30k+ per year after first year, because Arrival Plus AF is $30 more than Venture.

If you receive a call from 302-255-8000 after applying for this or any other Barclay's card, it is a legit number! You can also call them back directly at 866-951-1437.

Applied a few days ago. Checked status today. Approval may take seven to ten days and delivery of card within about thirty days.

Hmm. I definitely would expect hotels.com to work. It's even listed in the wiki as working for someone else. Maybe a glitch? Did you look at the category that it feel under by clicking on the purchase in your transaction list?

For real? No offense...

Seriously, this is my problem as outlined by previous poster, generating valid spending after the minimum spend bonus has been used up.

What would be the steps to applying for another card? Should first balance be paid in full or at least look profitable to them (Barclays)?

Getting ready to fold up US MC for the year and another Barclays would be a bigtime help!

Is it better to round up when redeeming?

For instance, I have a $66.20 charge. I could redeem 6700 miles (rounding up) or I could redeem 5000 miles (for $50 credit).

So I would be losing out on 80 miles if I redeemed the higher number of miles.

I assume nobody is rounding up and redeeming more miles to get the full transaction amount credited in such cases?

Hmm, okay redeemed 45,000 miles against a $598 charge.

So I'm not seeing the $450 credit but assume it will post. However the deduction of the 45000 miles and then the credit back of the 4500 miles was instant.

How long does it take for the credits to post?

[QUOTE=jan_believes;23609885]For real? No offense...

Were you not aware that most(if not all) banks allow you to pay your balance off before statement close date and then once satisfied, make that paid portion avaliable for additional spend?

You can find plenty of datapoints in the other CC threads in flyertalk (in addition to other forums) and in the Manufactured Spend threads.

Hope this helps as well.

I don't have time to wade through 30 pages of responses to see if my situation was already discussed. If this is considered drivel, please ignore or delete if you have the power.

Last year when in Switzerland we had a few instances where my swipe/signature card gave me trouble. Always eventually got it to go through, but thought I should attempt to forestall issues this year by getting a CHIP + PIN card, so I got the Arrival +.

I had read somewhere that you need to first use the card at an attended station to activate the PIN, and then it could be used in unattended kiosks. I used it at the rental car counter upon arrival in ZRH. No PIN was asked for. Over three weeks, every single transaction was processed as CHIP & Signature.

Strangely enough, I did a couple transactions with my stripe only Chase MileagePlus card at gas station kiosks and it asked for my PIN, and worked fine...

It will only ask for your PIN if the Signature option isn't available. BTW, I don't think the Chase card is a CHIP + PIN card.

So it looks like meeting the $3k spend to get the 40k miles should allow you to end up with 46k miles, resulting in about $500 credit after most of the miles are redeemed.

Not bad.

Now if you could transfer those miles to FF programs like Chase UR points ...

OIC. Still seems kind of odd...

No, it's not. There is no CHIP. It's a mag stripe only. That's why I found it odd that it was accepted in an unattended kiosk with a PIN...

Yeah, that is weird. Overseas plenty of machines didn't even have a magstripe reader at all. The only way to pay was to insert the card into the reader.

In other news, it's been 4 days and still I have not gotten any points from the stories I posted on the Travel Community. I've got 2,500 points owed to me now.

There are a # of cards you can do that with and I guarantee you would not be getting 2 miles/$1 if they did xfer. Furthermore, that is what is great about this card...being able to get reimbursed for travel charges that you cannot use airline miles/hotel points for
