I suppose... At first I was thinking "who's going to be making a bunch of phone calls during the eclipse?" But then I thought...I will take phone pics and shoot a little video, and those automatically get uploaded to Flickr, so I suppose a city full of people using their video/photo uploading services could crush the network.

The fact that said photo/video will inevitably suck won't stop me or anyone else from doing it. Facebook is going to be full of really boring, dark photos that day!

The only extraordinary precautions I will take will be to ensure I have plenty of charcoal, meat, and beer ahead of time. Human beings can survive a long time on meat and beer. And barbecue sauce.

I only now realized SLE is Salem, so I'm putting my name down there. I won't actually be at the airport but I'm assuming that's not what's meant anyway.

For those who intend to view the eclipse in urban areas, stay away from street lights. They will come on after a minute or so of totality. It has happened to me in prior eclipses.

At the risk of repetition, here is some good safety info from NASA about eclipse viewing glasses:

Not use homemade filters or be substituted for with ordinary sunglasses -- not even very dark ones -- because they are not safe for looking directly at the Sun

Our partner the American Astronomical Society has verified that these five manufacturers are making eclipse glasses and handheld solar viewers that meet the ISO 12312-2 international standard for such products: American Paper Optics, Baader Planetarium (AstroSolar Silver/Gold film only), Rainbow Symphony, Thousand Oaks Optical, and TSE 17.

The US Post Office is selling a new Forever stamp to celebrate the eclipse, made with thermochromic ink (image reveled with finger heat). International visitors coming for the eclipse might have to call around a few post offices to find them in stock.

We were going to do the festival at OSU but eventually settled on the soccer complex hosted by FC Timbers.
I'm staying down in Albany, OR the night before. Any recommendations on when we should drive up to the complex in Salem? Not sure how to gauge traffic.

Even for a given model of eclipse glasses, there are dozens of sellers on Amazon.

For example, see this listing for glasses by American Paper Optics (one of the manufacturers recommended by NASA, see my post #185 above):

https://www.amazon.com/Eclipse-Glass...dp/B01M2WDBQU/

And unfortunately, it turns out that at least some of those 28 sellers are pushing counterfeit, or improperly packaged/damaged, or otherwise suspect merchandise.

Something else people should know. Do NOT use flash photography for photographing the eclipse. It doesn't work and the light will screw up other people's photos.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but these flights will have a difficult time seeing the eclipse due to the windows and how high up in the sky the sun will be.
