HKG DO 2014 | 8-9 November

***NEW*** Registration now open!

HKG Arrival Transport Guide

Proposed Activities

Friday 7 Nov

During the day HongKongHikers (in the person of christep who manages that group) will be running a not particularly hard social hike anyway, which visiting FTers are welcome to join.

Information for this hike can be found in post 201. Please PM christep or comment in this thread if you wish to join to confirm details of where to meet etc.

5pm - Morton's in TST - Pre-pre-Do drinks, with complimentary filet mignon sandwiches
7pm - IC (Salisbury Road) Lobby Lounge - Pre-Do drinks with excellent views of the harbour

Saturday 8 Nov

Option 1:
Day trip on Hong Kong Island
Yum cha at 9am at Metropol (across the road from Conrad), followed by taking the Peak Tram up to The Peak and a walk around Lugard Road for excellent views of Hong Kong. Quick lunch while still at The Peak, then head down into town for a private tram tour for a maximum of 35 guests. Price of the tram tour will depend on the number of people signing-up but will not be more than HK$200 (around £15 or US$25) per person. Payment will be taken on the day. The tour will finish by 4pm, giving attendee time to prepare for the Do dinner on Lamma Island.

Option 2:
8.15am - meet at Admiralty or TST for day hike in the North East New Territories.
We will walk along the very picturesque shore of the marine geopark, visit the old (and now largely deserted) Hakka village of Lai Chi Wo, and finish around the edge of Starling Inlet, overlooking the border and the eastern end of Shenzhen. We'll take lunch at a local rice & noodles place at the end of the hike. The total distance is about 15km (a little under 10 miles) and there's only one significant bit of hill climbing of about 180m (60 floors of a building). It should be doable by anyone with the fitness to walk at a reasonable pace for about 4 hours. No specialist gear is needed - just lightweight clothing (no denim/heavy cotton please), strong trainers/sneakers, a hat to keep the sun off (if we're lucky), and a small backpack to carry enough water for the hike and any other essentials (which would include a change of clothing if it's warm or wet). Here are three albums of photos taken by HongKongHikers members on this route (the wild boar having just been killed by (I assume) village dogs is unlikely to be repeated!). And here's a Garmin GPS trace of the route.
4.45pm - back at Admiralty

All
6.45pm - Meet at Central for ferry to Rainbow Restaurant on Lamma Island for dinner. (Ferry departs 7.00pm). Please don't be late, as you'll have to swim to catch up.

Sunday 9 Nov

Option 1:
9am - Day trip to Lantau Island. It's close to the airport so anyone flying out can easily head off as necessary. Hiking option will be available for those who are not flying out today. Details here.

Option 2:
Champagne Brunch at the IC HK Enjoy a leisurely Champagne brunch from 11:30-15:00 at the IC's Harbourside $782 (inc service charge). Pay on the day. I'm currently holding reservations for 10 diners and will reserve places on a first come first served basis from expressions of interest through the registration form (links to registration form are found at the top and bottom of this wiki post!). After some discussion, the third option of a serious hike on Lantau has been canned since it seems that Andy's day trip is serious enough for everyone in terms of walking...

I think I can make (and would be interested) in either the Tai Chi class or the hike on Sunday the 9th. I might be available for a lunch or something on the 10th.

Cheers,
GrizShel

I have been monitoring flights for 2 people on KA CNX-HKG for Friday and UL HKG-BKK for Monday and the airfares have drastically increased this morning.

Looks like back to Air Asia for CNX-HKG at OMG o'clock and more than likely a QF award on CX for HKG-BKK as I want to take my fiancee on a lounge crawl.

And I finally had time to go out to Lantau Island for some photos, so if you're wondering what you'll be seeing on the Sunday, here it is:

We will first be travelling by MTR to Tung Chung. If somehow you lost track of the group, this is the sign to look for:

And once we arrive, our first stop would actually be the shopping mall.

Why, you might ask? As some may be carrying luggage for an afternoon departure, this (located in B2 and B3) comes in very handy:

Payments can be made with cash or an octopus card. Note that there are only 8 large lockers per floor, so if they run out, you'll need to head to the luggage storage provided by the cable car. The rates there are also quite reasonable.

Once the luggage are sorted, we will take a 10mins walk through the shopping mall, towards the ferry wharf.
View on the way - and you might be able to see the CX plane on approach if you have good eyes.

Wharf entrance:

And what you might see on the ferry:

The water can be quite choppy, but it won't be long until the arrival into Tai O, a village which has mostly kept the style of Hong Kong of yesteryear:

From here, we will take a brief walk through the markets.

Once through, there are a couple of short options for exploring. The walk to the old police station/heritage hotel is longer, and is quite popular.

Alternatively, walking in the other direction to the pavilion through the quieter residential areas is shorter, but it's also a very nice stroll.

We then retrace our steps to the terminal, and head on a short bus ride to Ngong Ping, home of the Big Buddha.

There are 268 steps to the top. The view is quite rewarding.

After which, we will head to the Ngong Ping 360 cable car for the ride back to Tung Chung, after passing through a very touristy "village". There are great views to be had as well, and this time, without the need to walk.

This should bring us back to Tung Chung around the mid-afternoon.

For those who are staying in HKG, we can either head back to town, or head to Mui Wo for dinner. Mui Wo is a quiet and relaxing beach, with its own ferry back to town. Otherwise, we can head straight back to town on the MTR from Tung Chung.

For those heading off to the airport, simply pick up your luggage, and catch bus S1. Cost is $3.50 HKD, and takes just 10 mins to the airport terminal. And if you happen to be in the QF lounge, this would be the view. Unfortunately, the photo may be misleading, as the A380 no longer flies to HKG.

And that caps off the Lantau Island tour.

Very much looking forward to all this! Thanks for the time put into organizing it all! (Especially the photo trail for those of us likely to wander off unexpectedly.)

Now to book flights.

I hope I haven't made a mistake but one can enter Macau on an Australian passport and Thai passport without a visa.

Australian passport definitely yes.

Thai passport I think is a yes too - my mum's maid does it to leave HK for visa requirements.
(Just checked Timatic - 30 days...)

Confirm this is correct.

And not sure if you'll be flying out of HKG or MFM, although there are a few ferries every day that will take you directly into HKG airport from Macau.

I'm just across the border so it would be a great reason to drop by for the weekend.
Not yet 100% sure I can make it, so I'm on the interested list for now.

There's a family event in Macau on Sunday so all plans on hold on that day(tho I really want to do the brunch!)

Will join Friday evening and the Saturday hike. Not the lamma dinner. But depending on the size of the group shall I cheekily suggest post-dinner drinks at my restaurant?
