USa Today - TSA PSA's on your hotel TV

Starting today, the welcome screens on 1.2 million hotel television sets in Marriott, Hilton, Sheraton, Holiday Inn and other hotels in the USA will show a short public service announcement from DHS. The 15-second spot encourages viewers to be vigilant and call law enforcement if they witness something suspicious during their travels.

Three data points for for the discussion:
  1. I am staying in a Hilton and did not see it.
  2. Who watches the welcome screen on Lodge Net?
  3. What did DHS pay for this insertion?

Well, it's finally official - the department of homeland security is now in bedrooms.

I've already sent complaints to the two hotel programs that I spend the most nights in.

Is "DSK is staying in the room next door to mine and the maid just ran down the hall crying" suspicious activity, or is that normal?

Wonder if Lodge Net figured out a way to freeze the tv until the PSA has run?

After all, 'if it keeps us safe'...(once again, mods, where is the barfing smiley when needed???)

I just complained to Marriott. It's bad enough dealing with the TSA at airports (and occasionally other places). They are definitely unwelcome in the comfort of my hotel room.

Why does this make me think of Orwell's book 1984?

Well, they already read certain journalists' email without a warrant about 2 years ago, so that doesn't seem too far-fetched.

It's unavoidable for at least a moment when you first turn on the TV.

For the record, the officer in the PSA is from Amtrak Police, which has a storied history of not letting TSA jerk them around.

Nothing new here.

I had one front desk manager at a Hilton in the LA area tell me "we MUST see your photo ID because the DHS tells us to check it and confirm it against the reservation". Either 1) she was giving a line of boloney or 2) she was telling the truth and admitting something she wasn't supposed to.

This message has been brought to you by the DHS Public Relations Firm of Feh, Blech, Ralph, Belch and Hurl (and it is the last name that I feel like doing right now)

Yeah, like I needed ANOTHER reason not to visit what remains of the US of A.

One of my favorite things about travel is witnessing something "suspicious". If I wanted to see stuff I completely understood and that was completely familiar, it's cheaper to stay at home. @:-)

Sheesh.
