Flew with CX on Sept 24 (Shanghai Pudong) and Oct 8 (JFK). check-in staff at Shanghai Pudong and JFK were very strict with the pre Sept 15 allowance. I was 1 kg over at Pudong and also 1 kg over in JFK. at both occasion, the staff told me that i was still entitled for the 'old' allowance so "this time i will allow it but make sure next time you meet your free allowance, otherwise i have no option but to charge you"

Done that too. Had a box of crisps from nrt on JAL. It was piece no.5 for OWE on business class so technically over. They apologised for not being able to check, then looked at it twice again.then they realised I wasn't gonna go without the crisps (open the box, bag everything) so they just checked it for me. AND apologised again.

I hope CX will be a bit generous for FFs but looking at the interline situation I won't keep my hopes up...

Thanks for the further responses. In that case, I'll stick with my allowed pre-Sept 15 30 kilos. So close and yet so far.

Does not apply to US-ASIA travel

I understand that this new luggage rules don't apply to US travel, only to rest of the world to and from HKG.

This is quite correct but there are actually three categories:
* To/From/Via The Americas (including Canada)
* Direct flight to Auckland
* The rest (not necessarily to/from Hong Kong).

The oil is not cheap, freight travel is cheap now (or lack thereof). Cathay (and other airlines) squeeze luggage weight from the passengers so they can carry more freight, which has been very lucrative for the past decade. Starting last year, freight travel has significantly decrease, and therefore, airlines are "adding weight benefits" that they have taken away in the first place. Just wait till the next freight bull market, airlines will be quick to reduce check-in baggage weight again.

This got me thinking, wouldn't 10 across, with checked-in baggage, add more weight to the plane that they wouldn't have for freight? I think there are 30 rows in Economy class? That's 30 more people with 60 more checked-in baggage (not counting possible GO members carrying 3) and each with max weight of 25 kg which is 1 more ton of weight, not counting body weight. I am just thinking how Cathay has done the math here, because I think the freight market will rebound and if Cathay has committed so many weight allocation to passengers, they will missed out on the next freight bull market.

They'll enhance it back to 3 pieces max 20kg then.

Or introduce HBO at the price of the pre-enhanced 30kg tix.

Experince whether CX strict with new weight rules?

As stated on subject line.
Is CX now very strict with a total weight of 40 kg for J (no status)? There are only two pieces but the weight might be 45 kg.

Thank you.

If you are in Y, the weight limit is 30kg not 40.

Would appreciate if members have experience to share as to how strict CX is with J baggage weight. Will eg, 43 or 45 kg be fine? Thank you.

When does a surcharge begin to be imposed? At 43 kg? 45 kg?
