AA Boeing 737-823 airframes are currently configured 16F, 144Y (including 30 MCE), but a Cabin refit has begun.
NOTE: in accordance with AA “Project Oasis” all Boeing 737-800 aircraft are being retrofitted between 2018 and 2021. The first refitted aircraft of 304 738 airframes, N979AN, re-entered Service 13 May 2018.
Business / First cabins use 16 seats like those found today in the AA A319, with reduced seat pitch and recline. Lavatories are ultra-slim Rockwell Collins Spacewall lavs. See Oasis: New seats & less pitch, WiFi IFE & power all 737 and A321 2019-21 for further information.
As conversion has begun we have started a new thread at https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/american-airlines-aadvantage/1912327-aircraft-guide-738-737-800-oasis-reconfigured-first-business-seat.html for Business / First (A319 Seat with reduced pitch and recline) seating in the new Project Oasis
You should be able to see which configuration a particular aircraft has by referencing the (unofficial) American Airlines Fleet Site here.
Pre-Oasis 737-800 / 738 First / Business Cabin Seating
All 738s delivered prior to 10 Dec 2013 are equipped with center ceiling mounted drop down screens. N939NN and N941NN and others delivered on or after 10 Dec 2013 have seat-back AVOD and 110 VAC plus 5 VDC USB seat power.
Please refer to the (unofficial) AA 737-800 Fleet Page Link for 737-800 configuration information by registration ("tail") numbers.

If you can, definitely go for F on the JFK-LAX flights. If you're only in J for the flight then I'd still pick a 762 J seat over a 738 F seat. While I'm a big fan of the 738 F seat, it doesn't have the extendable legrest that the 762 J seat has. I could be very comfortable in a 762 J seat for the transcon. I'm sure the 762F is a notch above that.

Ewr to lax may be the biggest nightmare of all time. 757 have terrible first class, no gogo, and there are only 3 flights a day. American does a horrible job at ewr. Jfk has 3 class to lax, the business class on 767 is better that 1st class 757 + jfk has flights every hour in case you experience challenges.

On the chance that the OP needs tier points, I'd recommend routing LAX-MIA-JFK, with LAX-MIA on a 763. Alternatively, LAX-SFO-JFK with SFO-JFK on a 763. Either route would be the best seating option for a First Class (two class) transcon.

Great point--anyone doing a TP run comprised of domestic US flights would be well advised to pick 2-class flights only to save money, as 3-class F is generally more than 2-class F on such domestic itineraries.

For a transcon you will most likely fly on the new 737-8 (738). I would not say it is a plane to "avoid at all costs". That little plane is fine (in my book).
But, as the rest has pointed out:
762 J or F is way better than 738 F.

I agree--F on the 738 is actually quite nice (especially if you're on a newer/CIP'd 738, indicated by Y going to row 30 rather than 28). Y on the 738 can be less comfortable, especially when you're two people flying together (as the Mad Dogs and widebodies have two-side seating, and the slAAveships have row 9).

For the same price, definitely pick JFK-LAX on the 762 in first. I personally find that seat nicer than any seat but the Flagship Suite on the 777.

The OP was referring to a domestic transcon, after which it was suggested that routing on 2-class birds would maximise TP earning on BA. I followed by clarifying that it will generally be cheaper to buy domestic 2-class F than domestic 3-class F. If the OP was changing planes at JFK, I doubt flying into EWR would have been an option. To avoid confusion, I will update my post to clarify that this axiom is true for domestic itineraries.
