Too much consolidation I'd guess.

Could you elaborate? Do you mean they have more overlapping routes than DL/NW UA/CO?

I'm surprised I got the push notifications from UK and French media before the US ones.

Bad timing. Last-mover vs. first mover makes all the difference.

DL/NW and UA/CO occurred when airlines financial performance was much worse than now and there were too many seats.

AA/US are both making piles of cash independently. They have a tough economic case to make.

Politics isn't really a major factor - CO/UA final approval came from the current administration.

Is this lawsuit potentially just a ploy by DoJ to get some more concessions? It seems late in this game to be attempting to stop it now...

The feds saw how the UA/CO merger ruined two good airlines, and they want to save AA and US from making the same mistake?

Wow, I wonder if AA management and the UCC has/had a backup reorganization plan if the merger fell through?

I have mixed feelings, I was initially against the merger, but I opened up a US airways credit card a few weeks ago in anticipation of combining miles and eyeing that F seat on a Qantas A380.

Wow, so the DOJ finally said enough was enough huh?

I mean that the DOJ is finally starting to worry about a reduction in the number of competitive airlines. Also I bet some people in Washington are worried that the new airline will have > 65% of flights at DCA.

AA and TWA merged, US and America West merged. Both airlines had their chances already.

But this is good news. The US has been doing a good job enforcing laws like the Sherman Act. I hope this merger does not happen.
