Would appreciate any advice as I am struggling to use my A3 miles. First time I've tried to use them after getting to Gold a couple of years ago. I created a 'together' account with my wife, so now we have 160k miles to spend. We are planning a mammoth SA-US-HI-SJO trip and have been trying to figure out the best way to use miles in the midst of this.

Originally looked at using them on the CPT-JFK leg return but the YQ (fuel surcharge) was over half the ticket. So, instead trying to use them in North America as UA wasn't passing on YQ. Im looking at tix for;

GSP-YVR
YVR-LAX
SJO-IAH

Finding lots of options on the UA award search, but called A3 and they literally couldn't find a single ticket. I realise UA may keep some seats for their own customers, but I found up to 10 1 stopover options on the UA site and the A3 call center couldn't find a single seat.

For the SJO-IAH they said that Copa airlines wouldn't allow them even to check. Very strange I thought, but maybe this is common. I though *A shared partner avaliability more than this?

Any Advice appreciated...

Keep in mind, you can only have 1 stop transfer. Also, A3 does not get all the reward space compare to other *A members. For US-HI, using other currency such as Avios from LAX/SEA-HNL would be more economical since it is distance base.

Perhaps you can ask the A3 agent to break out the segments and search it individually to get the award. I am surprised about the COPA award, that is not acceptable..

Yes, thanks for the info there. I was aware that A3 only allows one stop. So, I figure out my trip today. Not quite sure what the problem on the A3 side is..but I wish they had an online interface like UA site!

I was looking for availability through the UA site and the ONLY flights that A3 agent could see availability for were AC and AV flights. None of the UA flights I could see showed ANY availability through A3.

The A3 agent said they could see a few areas of availability with Copa airlines but the Copa system wouldn't let them book. And again, NO UA availability.

In the end, I did JFK-YVR via an overnight in YYR on AC and then the SJO-JFK with Avianca...

All in all, a very difficult process to spend those A3 miles, not sure I'll be crediting to A3 again unless I want to go for status again.

If I cancel a Star Alliance Award will I get a cancellation invoice for that or will they just charge my creditcard with the handling fee without any invoice (20€ right?)?

Good News!

Just got off the phone with the A3 agent, SQ officially have no YQ! I was quoted 42,47 Euro from SIN-CPH Y on SQ!^^

Too bad most long haul are in Y only, but save some $$ for Intra-Asia flight.

They will deduct 20 Euros from the fee that you paid, and credit the rest back to your credit card.

If the total fee is less that 20 Euros, they will charge 20 Euros from your credit card, and refund all the fee that you paid for.

No. Just two credit card entries, one for the charge and another for the refund.

Has anyone been able to book on NZ lately?
I was trying to book Y LAX - LHR with NZ on 5/29.
The Aegean agent says she sees seats available on NZ.
Then when she goes to get more information, she says can't be booked, not even 1.
I asked why and its just can't be book. Same response from 3 different people.
Do I have to wait til it gets closer to the date or are those just place holder availability for NZ Airpoints redemptions? I saw the reward availability on NH.
Thanks for the help.

I don't think you can book that flight because of maximum MPM. Flying NZ will force you to transit in AKL. You can probably fly from LAX-LHR via YYZ on AC, direct flight from UA with no YQ. LH,LX can also take you there but with high YQ.

Does anyone know how flexible A3 is with routing? I'm sort of confused about this 1 stop rule.

- If non-stop service exists AND has award availability, must you book this routing? Or can you opt for a route with a connection?
- If non-stop service exists and does NOT have award availability, you can choose a routing with a connection?
- If routing requires a connection point, you are free to choose wherever to connect provided award availability exists?

Stupid but simple rule: Not more than one connection allowed, otherwise you pay more miles. No if's of any kind.

Huh? That's a totally different question (this thread seems to make me believe that you CAN have 2 connections IF a one connection route does not exist?)

I'm asking if you can have ONE connection if a NONSTOP option exists, even if availability is present.

Example: A3 flies ATH-LHR. Can I book a reward ATH-SKG-LHR if ATH-LHR does not have availability but ATH-SKG-LHR does? What if ATH-LHR does have availability? Can I still opt for ATH-SKG-LHR?

...but you are not totally free to choose where that stop is. For example, for ATH-LHR you are not allowed to stop in DXB. There is a 'maximum deviation' from the direct route that is allowed (called max MPM). Besides that the stop has to be in the same zone as either your departure or arrival airport (see the zones on A3 website under Miles Redemption).

I am not actually sure however if there is a generic published rule about the max MPM. Does anyone know?
