Carry Ons--What is Being Allowed Now?

I travel with a 22 roll-a-board and either a computer bag or a garment bag. The former combination has never been a problem (even out of LHR where I had heard one bag meant one bag--apparently it really doesn't). Since 9/11, however, I haven't tried to carry on the later combination.

Is anyone getting through security these days with a garment bag (not an overstuffed one) and a personal bag, which just happens to be a 22" roll-a-board (but my computer will be in it)?

It depends on the airline, but most will not consider a 22" bag a personal carry on. American for example calls a personal carry on

Personal Items
Personal items include the following:
Purse
Briefcase
Laptop
Other similar items that do not exceed 36 linear inches (length + width + height) will be allowed such as a small tote bag, shoulder bag, or book bag.

Wow - 36 linear inches. My 19" (21" w/ wheels) rolling laptop case has 44 linear inches if I include the wheels. If I take off the handle on top (it's either that or the wheels), and smush the front pocket, I can get it down to 39 linear inches. Wow - I'm gonna have to think about this. My shoulder won't let me carry it, so I guess I'm going to have to find a rolling laptop case that fits this criteria.

Roll on plus garment bag - you are looking for trouble. The rules one ONE carryon plus personal item such as purse, briefcase or computer bag.

Good luck.

The problem is the rules are so darned inconsistent now. Last week I saw people boarding my flights with three carry-ons in San Francisco, but I know they couldn't get away with that other places or even at other times at SFO.

OH!, now I'm worried. I'm flying out tonite for the PIP II & was planning on taking an 18" roll on, rather than my tote bag--which would hold the same amount but 'no wheels'... I'm not really concerned about CO because I'm in BF, but I have to change in CDG for an AF where I'm in coach.
Should I go back to the tote bag????

Just caught a CNN item on "the new math" airline style. When does 1+1=3? Why, on the airlines. Given their embracing of such looney fares, why should these numbers be any different?

While thoroughly inconsistent, I have seen people get on with 22" roll-ons, a briefcast strapped onto these, and a coat and purse or smaller carry bag. My travels have all been in F or J since September 14th, and at several US airports I have seen the foregoing, as well as personally carried on: a 14"x9"x6" should bag, a purse-sized personal bag, and a single-suit garmet cover bag or a smaller carrier bag containing newspapers and magazines. I usually wear an overcoat, but of course must remove it for the security scan.

Don't think you'll have any problems with the larger roller bag, Mauld. Sorry to be missing the PIP, I was really hoping to have made it to Cannes. Enjoy!

We'll certainly miss you in France, but I'm sure we can be persuaded to have a toast to all the missing FT'ers

I got a really nice leather briefcase with extension handle and wheels. I carry my clothes and other personal effects in a gym-size bag (round duffel with shoulder strap), and just wheel both bags along behind me.

Not leather, but I grabbed one of the last one of these at Target. Its huge, expandable in durable fabric, with pockets galore and padding inside for a laptap. The best part was the extending handle, to wheel it, iss so tall!

I was thinking this would be great to bypass all the new rules, have this and a carry-on, but I have found that, at least on AA, unless you were really pushing it, people were allowed on with the usual stuff, an overstuffed backpack and a wheeled carry-on.

I'm returning the briefcase, unused, as I have found it too masculine for me (as I said its very large with tons of pockets). It originally cost $60, and I think that is too much to waste holding onto something that I may never have the opportunity to use.

The following is an e-mail received from the FAA.

"The FAA has issued an industry-wide limit for carry-on luggage of one bag no
larger than 10 x 16 x 24 inches and one personal item. Pets and duty-free items
are considered personal items, as are purses, briefcases, laptops, diaper bags,
camera bags, food containers and backpacks. No exceptions."

I have yet to see any carry-on rules enforced.
