Holiday Inn Melaka (Master Thread)
Van: 8 seater RM300 nett
MPV: 7 seater RM 450 nett
I recall the ride as not very comfortable despite we took the MPV (very old MB100 or so).

Any recent experience at this property?
I was thinking of again staying here in December. Am interested to know upgrade chances for a Gold member and if any buy up for lounge access?
Thanks in advance.
Cheers!

Remember though that this is an HI, not an IC, so expect 4 star rather than 5 star standard.
The upgrade options are limited - generally from city view to sea view. Actually I prefer the city view!
If you are doing a paid stay I would just pay the Club rate as rates there are really very low. I do not know what the upsell would be.

Holiday Inn Melaka
Functional and average (2 Photos)
Holiday Inn Melaka
Location
Located close to the Melaka Parade shopping mall (although there is no safe way to cross the rather busy road) by foot. They do provide a shuttle to the mall and some of the major attractions which is convenient. Do note that the shuttle is limited and they do recommend that you make a reservation. On the map, lots of the attractions and streets are close by, but if going by car, it'll take you longer due to the number of one-way streets.
Check In
I did not wait long before it was my turn to check-in. Room was ready but as a lowly Gold Elite member, no upgrade to a better room nor any further recognition. In my profile I did request for a high floor room, but was given one on the lower floor. I was rather tired, so I did not bother to go down to ask for another one. Did ask about the possibility to upgrade to have Club access, but they never came back on this, so I did not bother to ask.
Room
Room was facing the sea and right under the room was the swimming pool. Luckily the sound isolation was good, so there was not much disturbance from the shouting kids from the pool area.
Room size was ok, sufficient area to place the luggage and still have space to walk about. I've been to this property some years ago when it was fairly new, but now although it's clear that there are some wear and tear here and there, everything was functional and might be able to last for another 2-3 years by the looks of it.
There is tea and coffee making facilities and an empty fridge, althought the fridge was not really cool down even setting it at the lowest temperature. Water bottles were provided (2 bottles) which is nice.
The temperature control in the room functioned well.
Bathroom size was ok with a nice walk in shower and good temperature and water pressure. Amenities are the basic Holiday Inn amenities.
Internet was ok - although at times it did become very slow. Since I had to do some work and conference calls, this sometimes did become an issue for me.
TV channel selection was ok (different language and variations), however some of the channel reception was rather bad (very fuzzy picture).
Service
Staff in general were very helpful. The concierge was especially helpful in giving tips to find good local food (not those on Jonker street). If you have a car, parking is complimentary within the hotel compound.
The pool area looks well kept and the water temperature was good. The scenary from the pool was good.
Overall
In general, still a rather nice hotel with some good facilities for guests. Now that there is a new Doubletree in town, I'll most probably check that place out the next time and hopefully better status recognition.

Otherwise I very much agree with your review. I was in a Club room and the Club Lounge was great.

For Hatten, things seemed to be newer and fancier. And it is possible to walk but youd have to get across some chaotic road.

Booked a very reasonable rate under 200 MYR, including breakfast. Arrived around noon (had requested early check-in on app) and was greeted with keys waiting. Thanked for being Spire several times.
I was initially given a club room on the 19th floor, city view. I had (judging from the floorplan) the only somewhat larger club room (1902, almost junior suite sized). The view of Melaka is just great, but unfortunately the hotel is next to a busy 6-lane highway, and traffic noise at night is very bad. Asked for a Straits facing room the next day, and was moved to a suite on the 17th floor. Since I was on my own, I liked the larger club room better, but the suite was quite decent for a hotel of this category. Hotel is starting to show its age; it was built in 2007 and was a kindof mid-range affair then; its perfectly adequate now, but dont expect any luxury.
I had access to the club lounge, which was rather nice for a Holiday Inn. (Ive only been to a handful of HI lounges -theyre pretty uncommon afaik- and usually theyre just windowless rooms with some surplus furniture and maybe a cooler with soft drinks and some chips/muffins). Here, theres a very nice happy hour (6-8pm) with 4 hot items, several small plates, vegetables, fruits, and desserts. Youre in Melaka, so obviously filling up on lounge food would be a crime, but you could if you wanted to (they had some fried rice or noodles, a chicken dish, wontons, etc). Obviously its not an IC, but Ive seen far worse lounges at Sheratons and Hyatts, even in Asia. Theres cheap alcohol available for self-pour, but oddly youll have to request soft drinks and water, which are brought from the back. Breakfast was offered in the main restaurant on the 2nd floor; a generous spread. Not amazing quality, but nicely presented, and a huge selection.
The location is quite good, an easy walk to the historic center and some nearby malls. Crossing the highway is a little intimidating at first, but turned out to be just fine with some practice. Alternatively, theres an underpass a few minutes away. From the looks of it, the Doubletree is much more modern (but much further away, not really walking distance from the historic center), and theres a SLH/Hyatt option (Majestic), but at 3x the price and in a pretty drab location. Wouldnt hesitate to return to the HI.
