Luggage: Exceeding the permitted dimensions
Hi !
We'll be traveling to the US soon; there will be three flights, two with Virgin and one with Delta. Everything was booked with Delta.
I just looked at the baggage allowances and weights. And now I see there's a problem with the carry-on bag. The permitted dimensions are 35cm (Delta) / 36cm (Virgin) in width. However, this trolley is 39cm. The height and depth are fine !
Do you think we're at risk of having to pay a surcharge ?
Thanks for your feedback !

You'll likely be fine. Delta no longer has bag sizers at any of its ticket counters or gates. Delta does not charge for carry on bags. Worst case they make you check it at the gate, which is free.

But what do you mean by "check it at the gate" ? What happens to the luggage at that point ?

Is the dl flight domestic as in within the us or intl, for the intl on the wide bodies there will be no issue, far more attention is paid to how many bags then how large, now if your dl is within the us you might have an issue with space or if it is on a smaller plane it might not fit, you wont be charged it will just be gate checked, make sure you can quickly get any must haves out of your bag, but zero worries on the intl flights

Don't worry about it. I've been on Delta planes where my luggage was bigger than required or the actual correct size and it still didn't fit in the overhead compartments.due to the plane configuration. They just gate checked it at no extra charge, which they do all the time, and actually encourage passengers to gate check while waiting to board.

Thank you for your feedback!
But I still have a question: if I'm allowed to check in this oversized carry-on bag at the boarding gate, and once in the cabin, I realize it can't fit in the overhead compartment, what happens?

My wife flies with a giant carry-on that greatly exceeds the listed dimensions and has never had any issues or been forced to gate check. It's a soft bag so she still squeezes it under the chair, but if they actually measured it, it would technically be way outside the listed dimensions.
She's been using this same bag for at least 5 years.

You will be fine, the a321 has ample sized bins, in comfort plus you will board early enough to find space, many planes have extended bins these days making for even more overhead space. If for some very odd reason you can’t find space your bag gets checked to your FINAL destination. I think dl has slightly smaller bag sizes because they have a very large fleet with tons of different size planes and bins but they really don’t much care at the gate and your actual flight is on a plane with decent size bins
also, you will probably hear a bunch of dire announcements about overhead space and bringing your bag to the counter to check it in at the gate, ignore said announcements, you are in an early boarding group, half the time there is plenty of space even with the dire announcements

Don’t show up late for boarding where you miss your early Comfort-+ boarding zone. In most cases they start requiring checking in all remaining bags when the cabin starts to get full.
With C+ you will be fine.

Hi ! I'm back with another question about baggage.
As a reminder, here are our flights :
1) LHR - MCO (09/19/2025) : Delta 5971 (operated by Virgin - VS91) - Premium (G) - A330-900Neo
2) MCO - LGA (10/03/2025) : Delta 2239 - Delta Comfort (W) - A321
3) JFK - LHR (10/07/2025) : Delta 5992 (operated by Virgin - VS46) - Premium (G) - A350-1000
And here's what I received by email from Delta :

We can see from this table that checked baggage is free, but the MCO-LGA segment doesn't appear (however, there is MCO-LHR) ! Also note that it mentions October 3rd, not October 7th.
So, I'm wondering if I'll have to pay for checked baggage (on Delta's website, it clearly states that it's chargeable on US domestic flights).
Do you have any ideas ?
