Hotel in Page, AZ

At the end of June Mrs. Meineke, Tim Jr and I are meeting up with Grandma & Grandpa in Vegas. We are then going to a nice lodge outside of Bryce Cayon. Next we were thinking of dropping down to Northern AZ to see The Wave in Vermillion Cliffs and Antelope Canyon. We're having a bit of trouble finding somewhere nice to stay - it appears that our choices are the Amangiri at $695 per night, or Page, where the best hotel appears to be the HI Express. Anything in between?

That's quite the range...

I usually stay at a quaint little place closer to the Vermilion Cliffs - it's called Lees Ferry Lodge (http://www.vermilioncliffs.com/). It won't compare well to an Aman property, but it's comfortable and relaxing in its own way. There's an on-site restaurant with good food, a huge selection of beer, and it puts you an hour or so closer to Coyote Buttes and the Wave.

BTW, if you don't already have permits for Coyote Buttes, you will almost certainly not be getting them unless you're willing to hang out for the day-of/next-day permits (which requires an on-site visit to the office about 30-45 minutes from Page/Kanab).

The Powell Museum in Page is worth 45 minutes, and the Visitors Center at the dam is worth a half an hour, if you haven't been to either.

However, the HI Express has increased the hotel quality range in Page dramatically

We are booked into Courtyard by Marriott Page at Lake Powell. This seems reasonable.

Other properties in Page were not all that attractive.

It has been a lot of years, but...

We stayed in Page in a campground and, after seeing how close it was, decided that next time, we'd just drive to Kanab, UT. There was a much better selection... and a nicer town in general.

Kanab certainly has the better choice of restaurants and is closer to most things you'd want to visit in that area. However I've not yet come across a "nice" hotel in Kanab - though the Victorian Inn (Clarion IIRC) looks like one of the nicer ones.

While I would agree, Kanab's restaurant choices are also fairly drab, although they do probably beat Page's.

(Although the restaurant attached to the Best Western north of Kanab with it's giant neon sign, "Ho-Made Pies," is striking )

I've not noticed that sign before...

Nedra Too's cafe is my favorite joint in Kanab, but my friends who travel through there more frequently than I can't stand the place - they go to a joint about a half-mile east.

Tim

You might do a search under Kanab in the trip reports and get my trip report, including things in this area and places to stay

The Rockin' V Cafe is the only place in Kanab with good food. As far as accommodations Kanab and Page has only poor choices. You may want to check on the location of the Aman property, I believe it is more than 30 minutes from page. In Page you can get a descent Mexican meal on John Wesley Powell Blvd, I don't remember the name of the place. There is also an Oregano's restaurant that does descent Pizzas/ Italian-Americanized style food. I suggest a house boat for that time of year. The lake is the only place to be in June

Total side note, but if you're looking for something to do while in Page, I'd recommend getting up early one day & do the morning tour of Antelope Canyon (which you probably have to arrange in advance) - the morning tour will have much better "lighting" in the canyon than an afternoon tour will (and in June, the morning won't be as hot!).

A very cool & worthwhile experience, IMHO
